SLIDE - LOVE IS A VERB
“Love is a verb, not a noun. It is active. Love is not just feelings of passion and romance. It is behavior. ~Susan Forward~
“Love is a verb, not a noun. It is active. Love is not just feelings of passion and romance. It is behavior. ~Susan Forward~
SLIDE - DO YOU AGREE WITH THAT STATEMENT?
THIS IS A LOADED STATEMENT
IF WE REDUCE LOVE TO A DOING WORD THEN WE MISS THE SOURCE OF LOVE.
WE COULD BE NO BETTER THAN THE PHARISEES.
LET ME EXPLAIN:
WE CAN TALK ABOUT LOVE WITHOUT TRULY LOVING
EACH MORNING AND EVENING THE JEWISH PEOPLE RECITED THE SHEMA
4 “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.
5 And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength.
WE CAN ALSO ACT LOVING WITHOUT REALLY LOVING:
THIS IS WHAT THE APOSTLE PAUL TELLS US IN THAT WELL QUOTED SCRIPTURE :
3 If I gave everything I have to the poor and even sacrificed my body, I could boast about it; but if I didn’t love others, I would have gained nothing.
To understand love correctly, we must see that love originates as a noun that necessarily produces verbs.
THE REMEDY IS FAR MORE THAN US TRYING TO “ACTION” OUR LOVE.
THERE NEEDS TO BE A DEEP TRANSFORMATION WITHIN OUR SOULS - NEPHESH
WHICH REALLY MEANS OUR WHOLE LIVING BREATHING BEING.
8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.
Pastor kaleb kicked off our series last week - J.O.Y.
SLIDE :
JOY COMES WHEN YOU LOVE - JESUS
HE SPOKE TO US ABOUT LOVING JESUS FIRST - THE SHEMA
LOVING GOD WITH ALL OF OUR HEART, SOUL,MIND AND STRENGTH
I DONT KNOW ABOUT YOU BUT I WAS TAKING NOTES AND THEN EVENTUALLY I GAVE UP BECAUSE I REALISED I WAS SO BUSY TAKING NOTES I WAS MISSING OUT ON THE GOOD STUFF.
SO I CHEATED AND ASKED PASTOR KALEB TO SHARE THE NOTES AND GUESS WHAT I AM GOING TO SHARE THEM WITH YOU IF YOU LIKE.
YOU CAN CLICK ON THE LINK THAT HANNAH IS GOING TO POST IN THE CHAT AND YOU CAN SAVE THEM. IF YOU CANT DO THAT AND WANT THE NOTES JUST SEND US A MESSAGE AND WE WILL GET THEM TO YOU.
AUGUSTINE QUOTE:
Love, and do what thou wilt:
THE LOVE OF GOD COMPELLS US:
WE GET THIS IRRESISTABLE URGE TO BEHAVE IN A CERTIAN WAY .
TODAY WE LOOKING AT THE NEXT PART AND THAT IS:
+ - SLIDE OTHERS
I WANT TO TAKE US BACK TO THAT SCRIPTURE WE LOOKED AT A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO.
PICTURE YOURSELF BACK IN THAT VINYARD
JESUS IS THE VINE
GOD THE FATHER OUR VINEDRESSER/ GARDNER
WE ARE THE BRANCHES
IN THE VINYARD WE WILL BE SUBJECT TO:
STORMS
PESTILENCE
FALLING / UNATTACHING
WE ARE BEARING FRUIT NOT BECAUSE OF WHAT WE CAN PRODUCE BUT BECAUSE WE REMAIN ATTACHED TO THE VINE AND LET IT WORK THROUGH US.
WE ARE NOT PRODUCERS WE GROW FRUIT BECAUSE GOD IS WORKING THROUGH US.
SCRIPTURE SLIDES
JOHN 15 - WALK THROUGH THE SLIDES SLOWLY
V 11 JOY - EXPAND
9 “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love.
10 When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love.
11 I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!
12 This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.
13 There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
14 You are my friends if you do what I command.
15 I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me.
16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name.
17 This is my command: Love each other.
IN CONTRAST TO HAPPINESS IS JOY. RUNNING DEEPER AND STRONGER.
JOY IS THE QUIET CONFIDENT ASSURANCE OF GODS LOVE AND WORK IN OUR LIVES. - THAT HE WILL BE THERE NO MATTER WHAT.
V 12 & 17 TELL US LOVE EACH OTHER
REPITITION MEANS THAT WE NEED TO STOP AND TAKE NOTE
THIS IS WHAT JUMPED OUT AT ME - EACH OTHER IN THE GREEK IS TRANSLATED AS ALLELON (al-lay'-lone) Definitionone another, reciprocally, mutually
WHEN I REALLY STARTED TO LOOK AT WHAT THAT MEANT IT STRUCK ME THAT THIS IS NOT A ONE SIDED DEAL. IT APPLIES TO BOTH PARTIES.
JESUS GIVES A STERN WARNING TO THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO LISTEN
SO HERE WE ARE. IF YOUR LISTENING SAY AMEN
LUKE PASSAGE - SHOW TENSION
READ ONLY VERSE 32-33
32 “If you love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them!
33 And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much!
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
BEACAUSE WE REPRESENT THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY
35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
JESUS GIVES US ALL THE ANSWERS WE NEED IN THE SCRIPTURES:
GENUINE AFFECTION -Love from the center of who you are; don’t fake it. Run for dear life from evil; hold on for dear life to good.
TAKE DELIGHT IN HONOURING EACH OTHER - Be good friends who love deeply; practice playing second fiddle.
DONT BE LAZY WORK HARD SERVE THE LORD ENTHUSIASTICALLY - Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant.
BE PATIENT IN TROUBLE, KEEP PRAYING - Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder.
HELP THOSE IN NEED, PRACTICE HOSPITALITY- Help needy Christians; be inventive in hospitality.
10 Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other.
11 Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.
12 Rejoice in our confident hope. Be patient in trouble, and keep on praying.
13 When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.
LIVE IN HARMONY WITH EACH OTHER -Bless your enemies; no cursing under your breath. Laugh with your happy friends when they’re happy; share tears when they’re down.
MIX WITH ALL PEOPLE NO MATTER WHO THEY ARE -Get along with each other; don’t be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies;
DONT BE A KNOW IT ALL - don’t be the great somebody.
16 Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!
25 This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other.
MAKE ALLOWANCE FOR EACH OTHERS FAULTSThe way God designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a church: every part dependent on every other part, the parts we mention and the parts we don’t, the parts we see and the parts we don’t. If one part hurts, every other part is involved in the hurt, and in the healing. If one part flourishes, every other part enters into the exuberance.
THINK OF WAYS TO MOTIVATE EACH OTHER - And mark that you do this with humility and discipline—not in fits and starts, but steadily, pouring yourselves out for each other in acts of love, alert at noticing differences and quick at mending fences.
Let’s see how inventive we can be in encouraging love and helping out,
2 Always be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other’s faults because of your love.
24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works.
DONT GRUMBLE ABOUT EACH OTHER - Don’t bad-mouth each other, friends. It’s God’s Word, his Message, his Royal Rule, that takes a beating in that kind of talk. You’re supposed to be honoring the Message, not writing graffiti all over it. God is in charge of deciding human destiny. Who do you think you are to meddle in the destiny of others?
CONFESS TO ONE ANOTHER AND PRAY FOR EACH OTHER -
Make this your common practice: Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed.
11 Don’t speak evil against each other, dear brothers and sisters. If you criticize and judge each other, then you are criticizing and judging God’s law. But your job is to obey the law, not to judge whether it applies to you.
9 Don’t grumble about each other, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. For look—the Judge is standing at the door!
16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.
THAT IS NOT A DEFINITIVE LIST - I FOUND THOSE IN A FEW SHORT SCRIPTURE VERSES.
I TOLD YOU THAT JESUS ISSUED US A VERY STERN WARNING ABOUT LOVING OTHERS - IT CAN BE OFFENSIVE AND EVEN BRING OUT SOME FEELINGS IN YOU.
HOW DO WE DO THIS?
GOD’S WORD
OUR HEARTS
START MAKING CHANGES:
BUT LET ME JUST GIVE YOU A TIP HERE
IT STARTS WITH ME. - YOU.
PUT YOUR HAND ON YOUR HEART AND SAY - IT STARTS WITH ME.
OK SO THIS WEEKS CHALLLENGE COMES STRAIGHT FORM SCRIPTURES - IT EVEN TELLS US WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO DO IT.
BIBLE VERSE TO END OFF WITH
ON SCREEN IS THE MESSAGE BIBLE VERSION READ FROM LUKE 6 :27-37
27-30 “To you who are ready for the truth, I say this: Love your enemies. Let them bring out the best in you, not the worst. When someone gives you a hard time, respond with the supple moves of prayer for that person. If someone slaps you in the face, stand there and take it. If someone grabs your shirt, giftwrap your best coat and make a present of it. If someone takes unfair advantage of you, use the occasion to practice the servant life. No more payback. Live generously.
31-34 “Here is a simple rule of thumb for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you; then grab the initiative and do it for them! If you only love the lovable, do you expect a pat on the back? Run-of-the-mill sinners do that. If you only help those who help you, do you expect a medal? Garden-variety sinners do that. If you only give for what you hope to get out of it, do you think that’s charity? The stingiest of pawnbrokers does that.
35-36 “I tell you, love your enemies. Help and give without expecting a return. You’ll never—I promise—regret it. Live out this God-created identity the way our Father lives toward us, generously and graciously, even when we’re at our worst. Our Father is kind; you be kind.
SO TODAY I WANT TO EXTEND TO YOU THE OPPORTUNITY TO LISTEN TO THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST WHO CAME TO SAVE US AND BRING US ETERNAL LIFE. HE CAME TO GIVE US A NEW WAY OF LIFE NOT ONLY FOR AFTER WE DIE BUT ALSO FOR NOW. JESUS PROMISED US ABUNDANT LIFE RIGHT WHERE WE ARE AT.
PERHAPS YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE AND ARE CURIOUS YOU CAN CONTACT US VIA OUR RESPECTIVE WEBSITES, WE WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU. LET US KNOW HOW YOU ARE DOING
PERHAPS YOU HAVE NEVER MADE A COMMITMENT OR TAKEN THOSE STEPS TO SAY - JESUS I DO BELEIVE - I CONFESS THAT I HAVE SINNED BUT NO LONGER WANT TO LIVE THAT WAY. PLEASE LET YOUR HOLY SPIRIT COME AND BRING ME NEW LIFE, RIGHT NOW TODAY.
PERHAPS YOU FEEL LIKE ME THAT YOU HAVE NOT BEEN LIVING THE WAY GOD INTENDED
ARE YOU READY TO PRAY A VERY DANGEROUS PRAYER TODAY
PRAYER
I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thou wilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed for thee or laid aside for thee, exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen.
Father, we thank you for your Son, Jesus, whose life was and continues to be the ultimate drink offering. Come, Holy Spirit, and give me the fullness of him that my life might be poured out for his glory. It is in his name we pray, amen.
