Introduction.
Someone said we are spiritual being having a physical experience. and with it comes conflict of interests between the flesh and the spirit. The apostle Paul in the letter to the Gal tells us to “..live by the Spirit and you will not gratify the desire of the flesh, he says and those who belong to Christ have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires.”
Body
That’s tough language! But it is fitting for lent. An effective way of crucify the the flesh, is by fasting, praying and almsgiving. It works mysteriously, when we fast and pray, we rule over our flesh by the spirit, even for a good thing like food, and in that state of physical weakness when we do acts of charity, like feeding, clothing or providing shelter for a homeless person even temporarily, it frees them from heavy burden of their physical, experience, and in doing so by the grace of God, God hears our prayers and frees us from spiritual weaknesses. I think that’s what Isaiah the prophet is talking about fasting in our 1st ready when done right in God’s spirit, he says Then Lord will then hear our cry for help and answer here I am
Conclusion
The Roman Catholic Church encourages those who are able, to fast on Wednesdays and Fridays of Lent. If you have never done it start with little steps let the spirit guide you, and may all who fast pray and give alms, crucify the desires and passions of the flesh, be strengthened body soul and spirit, and may the Lord hear their cry for help, swiftly and answer, here I am.
