We went from our Identity, To understanding basic beliefs. There are more beliefs than what we covered, but I believe what we covered is meant to pave the road to where we are going. With our Identity found in Christ and an understanding of what we believe the next question I want to answer is
Why do we do what we do?
Why do we work? More importantly why do we work where we work? Why do some things come easy for us and others do not?
It is a false belief in Christiandom that ministry HAS to be done within the walls of the church. We praise pastors for their work, we glorify worship teams and ministry leaders. We have Volunteer Sunday’s and praise people for the work they are doing in the church building. These are all good things and should be praised. Volunteering and doing work in the church is what keeps the word of God spreading, but it isn’t where it stops.
I have counseled people who feel lost in their work place. They don’t know why they do what they and worst yet they don’t feel like they have purpose. In bible college I was taught that ministry happened in the church. I wasn’t raised in church so everything I knew about God and church came from my 3.5 years in bible college. I can honestly state I have learned a lot, but through the years God has shown me that I have to unlearn a lot too.
Go gave each on us a set of skills.
Ephesians 2:10 ESV
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Each one of us has been prepared by God for good works. Every single on of us has a calling on our lives and for some of us that calling may not be in the church building. For many of us our calling and gifts can be shared here and they should be, but if it’s the only place we share our gifts is in the church building than we are missing out on who God made us to be.
We are saved by grace first to be someone-a Child of God; and we are equally empowered by the same grace to do something.
Here’s the truth:
Each one of us was created for GOOD works, which God prepared beforehand, That we SHOULD walk in them. Ephesians 2:10
The first thing we must notice is the word good. To us good isn’t the best, but isn’t the worst. This isn’t the same translation in Greek.
Good in greek means
Desirable, usable, efficient
This same word is used in
Genesis 50:20 ESV
As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.
This is speaking specifically about Joseph when Joseph was talking to his brothers who tried to get rid of him. But notice forst-Joseph’s work was outside of Israel-Today the church building. AND was in a business setting-running the kingdom.
God meant it for good-The term good here is directly linked to the act-keeping people alive which is the same call you and I have today-to spread the Gospel so that we may assist people into eternal life.
Truth: You should be the best at what you do.
If you work for Walmart- you should be the best Walmart employee. If you Volunteer at church you should be the best volunteer because we are called to give our best to God
2 Timothy 2:15 ESV
Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
God has given us a set of gifts and we are to use those specifically to expand the kingdom of God. I am a Pastor, I also run my own business, and do work for a roofing company. Being a Pastor is no more important than how I run my business or the work I do for the roofing company. Why? Because in every case my life should be a testimony. If God has blessed you to build a multimillion dollar business than he wants to use that business to financially provide for his Kingdom.
Yes God owns a cattle on a thousand hills, but those cattle are managed by his people, run by his people, and shared with his people. He needs pastors, worship leaders and ministry leaders, but he also needs, fast food workers, big box store employees. Small business owners, Janitors, nurses, Dr’s etc.
Our call is work our calling so that we need not to be ashamed. Shotty work should and will bring shame on your, but it will also bring shame on God and his word. When people know you are a christians they no longer see you, they see Christ through you and how you act, how you work, and what you do will build their perception of who Christ is and what he can do in their lives.
The second and last thing I want to point your attention to is the word should.
Each one of us was created for GOOD works, which God prepared beforehand, That we SHOULD walk in them. Ephesians 2:10
Should walk in—Realize this is where free will comes into play. Just because we should do something doesn’t mean we are forced to.
Psalm 139:16 The Message
Like an open book, you watched me grow from conception to birth; all the stages of my life were spread out before you, The days of my life all prepared before I’d even lived one day.
God has written your story from beginning to end and the story is Amazing, but it’s up to you to walk that story out. It’s up to you to choose to be the hero in your story.
When it comes to our gifts we have 3 choices
We can use the gifts to build the kingdom
We can use the gifts to build ourselves
We can neglect our gifts all together.
Which one will you choose to do?
