1. Humility in Prayer
1. Humility in Prayer
Then Jesus told this story to some who had great confidence in their own righteousness and scorned everyone else: “Two men went to the Temple to pray. One was a Pharisee, and the other was a despised tax collector. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed this prayer: ‘I thank you, God, that I am not like other people—cheaters, sinners, adulterers. I’m certainly not like that tax collector! I fast twice a week, and I give you a tenth of my income.’
“But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”
“I don’t take things at work...”
“I don’t cheat on my spouse...”
“I don’t yell at my kids...”
“I don’t get angry at the guy in the car that just cut me off...”
“I don’t get drunk… get high...”
“I give to the church...” “I pray...” “I even served once at a soup kitchen...”
Who are we to brag about our works? When our works get us no where?
We should be humble in our approach to God, as we have nothing without Him!
2. Have the Same Mind as Christ
2. Have the Same Mind as Christ
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
Christ had everything. He was God, but gave it all up for us in true humility.
3. His Final Prayer
3. His Final Prayer
“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.
Christ’s final prayer, was for us. For us to be one, so that the world may know Him.
How?
By humbling ourselves in prayer.
