OVERVIEW
All Christians are engaged in warfare whether we know it or not.Is a spiritual battle (Eph 6:10-12)
Ephesians 6:10–12 NIV8410 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.
Only God’s spiritual weapons will work (2 Cor 10:3-5)
2 Corinthians 10:3–5 NIV843 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

We are made in God’s image and after His likeness (Gen 1:26)
We are made in God’s image and after His likeness (Gen 1:26)
Made to have dominion over the earth (Gen 1:26; Psalm 8:6; Psalm 115:16)
Made to have dominion over the earth (Gen 1:26; Psalm 8:6; Psalm 115:16)
Genesis 1:26 NIV8426 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
Psalm 8:6 NIV846 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
Psalm 115:16 NIV8416 The highest heavens belong to the Lord, but the earth he has given to man.
Crowned with glory and honor (Psalm 8:4-6; Heb 2:5-7)
Crowned with glory and honor (Psalm 8:4-6; Heb 2:5-7)
Psalm 8:4–6 NIV844 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet:
Hebrews 2:5–7 NIV845 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified: “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 7 You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor
Fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:4)
Fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:4)
Psalm 139:4 NIV844 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord.
God’s workmanship (Eph 2:10)
God’s workmanship (Eph 2:10)
Ephesians 2:10 NIV8410 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
We consist of body, soul, and spirit (1 Thess 5:23; Heb 4:12)
We consist of body, soul, and spirit (1 Thess 5:23; Heb 4:12)
1 Thessalonians 5:23 NIV8423 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 4:12 NIV8412 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.
The “New Birth”
The “New Birth”
Is a spiritual rebirth (Jn 3:1-21)
Is a spiritual rebirth (Jn 3:1-21)
John 3:1–21 NIV841 Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. 2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.” 3 In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” 4 “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!” 5 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” 9 “How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. 10 “You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things? 11 I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony. 12 I have spoken to you of earthly things and you do not believe; how then will you believe if I speak of heavenly things? 13 No one has ever gone into heaven except the one who came from heaven—the Son of Man. 14 Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, 15 that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. 19 This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.”
Redemption of our bodies will take place at the resurrection (Rom 8:22-23; 1 Cor 15:51-54)
Redemption of our bodies will take place at the resurrection (Rom 8:22-23; 1 Cor 15:51-54)
Romans 8:22–23 NIV8422 We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. 23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
1 Corinthians 15:51–54 NIV8451 Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52 in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. 53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”
Total transformation of our minds a process that ultimately will be fulfilled at the resurrection (Rom 12:2; 1 Cor 13:12; 1 Jn 3:2)
Total transformation of our minds a process that ultimately will be fulfilled at the resurrection (Rom 12:2; 1 Cor 13:12; 1 Jn 3:2)
Romans 12:2 NIV842 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.
1 Corinthians 13:12 NIV8412 Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
1 John 3:2 NIV842 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
In meantime a struggle within us (Rom 7:15-25; Rom 8:5-6)
In meantime a struggle within us (Rom 7:15-25; Rom 8:5-6)
Romans 7:15–25 NIV8415 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. 21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.
Romans 8:5–6 NIV845 Those who live according to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace;
At “New Birth” Christ comes to dwell in you through the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 3:16; John 14:17; Rom 8:9; 1 Jn 4:4)
At “New Birth” Christ comes to dwell in you through the Holy Spirit (1 Cor 3:16; John 14:17; Rom 8:9; 1 Jn 4:4)
1 Corinthians 3:16 NIV8416 Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you?
John 14:17 NIV8417 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.
At “New Birth” You go to dwell in Christ (Eph 2:6; Jn 16:33)
At “New Birth” You go to dwell in Christ (Eph 2:6; Jn 16:33)
Ephesians 2:6 NIV846 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,
John 16:33 NIV8433 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
