“The Prophet’s Plea”

Chapter 7 begins with the Lord showing Amos, 3 of the 5 judgments He wants to impose upon Israel. Amos immediately begins to interceed on Israel’s behalf. Not knowing whether God will grant:

I. Mercy or Judgment! vs. 1-9

A. The Grasshopper Judgment! vs. 1-3

B. The Fire Judgment! vs. 4-6

C. The Plumbline Judgment! vs. 7-9

After speaking the judgment against Israel, a hireling prophet, Amaziah, comes against Amos. He tries to discredit Amos before King Jereboam II. Planting the seed of doubt to make the people wander whether Amos is a:

II. Messenger or Menace! vs. 10-17

A. Messenger of God!

1. Chosen by God

2. Says what God Says.

3. Stands against the enemy

B. Menace of God!

1. Chosen by Man

a. “made priests of the lowest of the people” 1Kings 12:31b

2. Says what man wants to hear

a. “whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold”

1Kings 12:28

3. Runs when the enemy comes
