Fulfillment Theology: A Way to Read the Old Testament through the Lens of Jesus
Jesus as the New Israel
#1: He Fasted Like Moses
40 daysMoses fasted and prayed for 40 days and nights twice (Ex. 24:18; 34:28).
Both time before the Law was given
THEN: Time of Preparing for the Law
TODAY: Preparing for a NEW Law
JESUS= New Moses with NEW Law
Law of GraceLove God, love neighbor as yourself
#2: He Hammers the Devil with Deuteronomy
Deut 8:3:  “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
Deut 6:16: ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
Deut 6:13: “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ”
Why Deuteronomy?
Wilderness=Place of Preparation!
Israel waits East of the Jordan in the Wilderness
Jesus Begins in the Wilderness!
Not only New Moses and New Law, BUT New Israel
He became what Humanity Couldn’t
He passed the test by being put to the test!
WILDERNESS: God’s Word Alone
Satan: “You’re starving, here, eat this”
All Israel did was complain in the desert, but here Jesus is not eating for 40 days and without complaint and without giving into temptation.
Reminds us what we need more than bread!Sacraments= MORE THAN BREAD!!
TEMPLE: Trusting in God Alone
Satan: Quick learner: Quotes scripture twice!
If you say who you are, just jump off your dad’s house!
Jesus fights fire with fire: Don’t put your God to the test
Jesus stands up top of the Temple is a powerful symbol of how Jesus would later refer to the temple as his body, one that he would give up for us. That event is what we celebrate together this evening with communion!
HIGH MOUNTAIN: Worship God Alone
High Mountain: “Look at all my power I could give to you!”
How often did Israel look at the power structures around them and want that for themselves?
How many idols did they worship over the generations?
Worship the Lord and serve him alone!
Goal for Tonight:
Look to Jesus
Do what Matthew was getting us to see!
Jesus is the New MosesJesus is the New IsraelJesus did what we couldn’tEverything points to Jesus!
Lent is a time when we reflect on Jesus himself!
As the BREAD of Life
As the TEMPLE himself
As the Subject or Worship
Point to Jesus:
Yesterday:
Nervous, tough to do on a Saturday afternoon… But it’s when people are home!4 Gospel Conversations:Fascinating conversations—> If you’re watching, a hello to you!!End of the day, two young men walked by us as we were debriefing…They stopped and listened, and listened…We explained the Gospel. We asked him, after hearing this, would you want to receive Jesus in faith right now?YES!Almost talked him out of it! But then he said, yes, I want to. Brother, “I’ll sit this one out.”
I’m not sure how this all works. I’m not sure how salvation all works. But I do know that that prayer with that young man was invigorating!!
We have this need for Jesus today…
This Supper is a way to express that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and no one can come to the Father except through Jesus.
