Introduction

I like bread . . .Bill Tice’s mother
The feeding of the 5000
Jesus is teaching in the synagogue in Capernaum.

The Bread of Life

John 6:26-27 They stated that their fathers had eaten of the manna in the wilderness, and then asked what what kind of a sign Jesus might give so that they might believe.
His response was that they ate bread Moses gave and still died, but that He was the bread of life.
Quest. What does it take to prove that Jesus is who He claims to be?
For the last 2000 years men have been questioning Christ’s existence.
Books have been written trying to prove or deny Christ.
We are still seeking a sign . . .
John 6:52-58
Jesus claims that whoever eats the flesh of the Son of Man and drinks His blood shall have eternal life.

The Reaction of the Jews

The Jews were incensed! They argued among themselves. How could Jesus give them His flesh to eat?
Some said this teaching is too difficult, who can stand to even listen to this?
Teaching Computer Science high school students who wanted to play games. Dropout rate was close to 40% in the first two weeks!
And so it was even with many of the believers who followed Christ.
Today people fire preachers . . . change churches . . . stop attending . . . still others seek some spiritual leader who promises them a utopia and no cost to them.

Peter’s Confession

John 6:67-71
Today, we, like Peter, must remember we do not follow a preacher or some other spiritual leader, but we follow the Holy One of God.
Preachers are not infallible. They doe not always get everything right. I like what Warren Wiersbe wrote, “When I teach the Word of God, I can claim authority for the Bible but not for all my interpretations of the Bible.”
New American Standard Bible Jesus Teaches at the Feast

Jesus therefore answered them, and said, “My teaching is not Mine, but His who sent Me. 17 “If any man is willing to do His will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I speak from Myself. 18 “He who speaks from himself seeks his own glory; but He who is seeking the glory of the One who sent Him, He is true, and there is no unrighteousness in Him.

Conclusion

So rather than follow some dream of a perfect society without bias or disagreements, or look for spiritual answers from earthly men or women, when asked, let us, like Peter, respond, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have words of eternal life. and we have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God.”
