A Study of Romans (25)
Injunction
In the past, as Paul reminds us in verse 20, their servitude to sin kept them free of righteousness; that is, no real righteousness was produced in their lives.
Inspected
Indeed, the believer is ashamed of the things his old master, sin, produced in his life. His “members” were indeed yielded to that master as tools by which all sorts of iniquity were produced.
These “holy” fruits are the good qualities that are spiritually-produced, “the fruits of the Spirit” (as Paul calls them in Galatians 5:22, 23). They are holy because they are produced by God for God’s own glory and pleasure.
Outcome
Serving sin, the way of life of the sinner, ends in eternal, spiritual death, the permanent separation of the soul from God.
We note the intentional contrast between “wages” and “gift.” In the one case we receive what we have rightfully earned. In the other, what we have not deserved at all, a gift of God’s grace.
