14 But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them;
15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
Introduction: Once again we are learning our example from the family of Timothy. You were introduced to Timothy’s grandmother and mother last week. Just in this text alone you can’t avoid the reality of how family evangelism is a MUST and that it is of great value!
I want to draw your attention to what Paul is bringing Timothy back too; WHAT HE WAS TAUGHT!
Let’s read the text together...
Did you notice the word “continue?” There was something introduced in Timothy’s life that was that transformational; THE HOLY SCRIPTURES! Did you notice how God uses His Word? To impart the wisdom of salvation to the heart of the unbeliever. LISTEN, this wisdom can ONLY COME FROM GOD.
So, if you are currently personally leading your family in God’s Word, then this message will bless your heart and be reaffirming. If you are lacking or just not doing this at all, this message is intended to help you see the reason, the work and the fruit of evangelizing your home.
1) The Need For Evangelism
1) The Need For Evangelism
A. Belief in the gospel
Romans 3:23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
The “freewill” of man is emphasized to a point of deception in churches today.
Notice the will of the lost sinner:
Colossians 2:13
Turn to: Ephesians 2:1-5
Turn to: Romans 3:10
Illustration: The nature of a buzzard (eat road kill or Malone’s Steak House salad?)
Some think today that a person can just wake up one day a get saved; WRONG!
Your children and family have no ability or will of their own to believe “in” Christ!
God MUST “draw” (drag, haul in, lead with force).
John 6:44 “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.”
B. There are deceivers
There is a false Jesus in many churches
I see parent letting their kids go to their friend’s church without ever giving a thought of what they believe and teach.
Here is the Jesus according to the wide culture:
No judgement
No accountability
No virgin birth
No holiness
No pain or suffering Jesus
Do whatever makes you feel good.
There is a false gospel preached
Are there some sound New Testament churches that does not have the Baptist name? I’m sure there are. Many however teach a hybrid gospel: Faith+works, Faith+baptism, by grace but no security, etc.
Listen to the importance the apostle Paul places on the variance of “gospels.”
Galatians 1:6-9
If you are placing your soul’s dependence on Jesus and His Gospel, you better make sure He is the RIGHT ONE!
2) The Work Of Evangelism
2) The Work Of Evangelism
A. Laboring in prayer
Pray for repentance and faith!
Repentance: Acts 5:31 / 2 Timothy 2:25 / Hebrews 6:2
Faith: Ephesians 2:8-9 / 2 Thess. 1:10-11 (faith never stops being a work of grace)
Salvation is by God’s power.
John 1:12
B. Laboring in discipleship
Now, the church does provide discipleship. It is part of the great commission!
Sunday School, Wednesday night Bible Study, etc.
Listen, the church was never intended to be a replacement for HOME DISCIPLESHIP!
Turn to: Deut. 6:6-9
C. Laboring in our example
Quote: “We must declare the Gospel with out lips and demonstrate the Gospel with out lives.” (John Goetsch)
Acts 20:24
Romans 1:1, 9
When dark days arrive, instead of trying to find blame, run from it or fall into a depression, pray to God that He will help you understand how to let the Gospel shine through.
Philippians 1:12-13, 27
Listen, if your verbal evangelism is going to stick in the heart of your children, they must see it faithfully in your practical evangelism.
The Gospel is a living breathing continual working of God’s GRACE!
James said, “Faith without works is dead.”
1 Thess. 1:5
3) The Fruit Of Evangelism
3) The Fruit Of Evangelism
A. God gives the increase
1 Cor. 3:7, 9
The very first sower and waterer of the Gospel your children and family need to be acquainted with is YOU!
Even though those whom God “calls” He promises to “justify” and one day “glorify,” God should not have to entrust the Gospel to someone else to reach your family in order to give His planned increase.
Illustration: If a farmer of a field expects a harvest to come by someone else just dropping by to sow and water his garden, he will spend many years with just a DIRT HARVEST.
The voices of Heaven are currently speaking this truth of salvation being a work of God alone.
Rev. 19:1
