Jacobs life is a reminder:
#1 God’s Plan
God is sovereign
Sovereign: supreme power or authority.
God’s sovereignty is one of the most important principles in Christian theology.
God’s sovereignty is a natural consequence of His omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence.
God is described in the Bible as all-powerful and all-knowing (Psalm 147:5), outside of time (Exodus 3:14; Psalm 90:2), and responsible for the creation of everything (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1).
And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived. The children struggled together within her, and she said, “If it is thus, why is this happening to me?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. And the Lord said to her,
“Two nations are in your womb,
and two peoples from within you shall be divided;
the one shall be stronger than the other,
the older shall serve the younger.”
One thing is true… God will use us as a vehicle for His purpose…
As parents / Grandparents / Guardians / Aunts or Uncles we have to remember that God has graced us to be caretakers of those around us.
God had a plan for two nations…
Jacob is a reminder that we are:
Vehicles
Agents
Connectors
to the fulfillment of His plans…
That’s why we have to manage what He gives us wisely…
#2 Jacob Is A Reminder - Your Love Life Matters
When Esau was forty years old, he took Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite to be his wife, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and they made life bitter for Isaac and Rebekah.
Women from Canaan was something forbidden even among Abraham…
that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and God of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell,
Then Isaac called Jacob and blessed him and directed him, “You must not take a wife from the Canaanite women.
“Your Mate Matters”
Your decisions can cause headaches…
#1 A headache for yourself…
Dating someone that doesn’t serve the same God as me… Can be a trouble
If I’m struggling to be conformed to the image of Christ - How can I conform someone else…
It’s nothing like sharing God’s word with someone..
Praying together
Laughing
Traveling
Physically attractive
God is in the center of it…
But trying to force a relationship
Trying to convince yourself
Can cause heartache…
Stress
Bitterness
Not only does it affect you but
Your children
Your close friends
Social media
What about from a parents perspective…
My dad use to ask… Who’s your people…
A good parent wants the best for their child....
#3 Jacob is a reminder - A Personal Relationship
And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring. Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.” Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.”
Jacob has a dream but its a personal dream
It’s directed to him concerning Him
I know God is the God of Abraham / Isaac
But G0d knows how to reveal himself to us....
He knows how to get our attention
He doesn’t want to be the God of your grandmother or Father
He wants to have a personal relationship with you.
He wants us to build our trust level in Him
#4 Jacob Is A reminder - Family Friction can be restored / Family Restoration
And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two female servants. And he put the servants with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all. He himself went on before them, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother.
But Esau ran to meet him and embraced him and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. And when Esau lifted up his eyes and saw the women and children, he said, “Who are these with you?” Jacob said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” Then the servants drew near, they and their children, and bowed down.
20yrs passed
And Isaac breathed his last, and he died and was gathered to his people, old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
