Victory at Jesus Coming

Mark 11:9

9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna (Save us Now-Deliver-Rome) ( Cry of Help-Hope / Cry of Joy-Praise) (Fulfillment expectations from Christ-fulfilling prophecy-The Promise of God); Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord: [1]

9 And those who went before and those who followed cried out [rwith a cry of happiness], Hosanna! [Be graciously inclined and propitious to Him!] Praised and blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord! [Ps. 118:26.]

[2]

†9 In front of Jesus and behind him, people went along shouting,

“Hooray! God bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

[3]

9 He was in the center of the procession, and the crowds all around him were shouting, “Praise God!* Bless the one who comes in the name of the Lord!

Ps 118:25

25 Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.[5]

25 Save now, we beseech You, O Lord; send now prosperity, O Lord, we beseech You, and give to us success!

[6]

†25 We’ll ask the Lord to save us! We’ll sincerely ask the Lord

   to let us win.

[7]

25     Please, Lord, please save us. Please, Lord, please give us success.

- return of prosperity to the Capital City of Jerusalem.[9]

Days later they rejected Him because He did not provide military/political deliverance.[10]

  • crucified – Mark 15:13
  • And they cried out again, Crucify him.

It takes more than participation at a praise gathering to be a true friend and follower of Jesus.[11]

EXPECTATIONSLike those who witnessed Jesus’ victory parade into Jerusalem, we have expectations for what we think God should do to make life better, safer, and more enjoyable. Like excited spectators, we can’t wait to see suffering stopped, injustice corrected, and prosperity begun. Like the people on the road to Jerusalem that day, we have much to learn about Jesus’ death and resurrection. We must not let our personal desires catch us up in the celebration and shouting lest we miss the meaning of true discipleship. In our excitement and celebration, we must remember that following Christ involves hardships. It may include suffering, even death.
