Do We Care About Things That Jesus Care About?

I read in the news about the increasing trend of
As followers of Jesus, saved and secured, we are to behave like Him as we are his representatives here on earth.
As his representatives and stewards of King Jesus, we are to care about the things that he care about!
Outline:
Allow me share to you 3 things Jesus cares about from our passage this morning:

I. Personal Ministry

John 21:15–17 NASB95
15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep.
a. Jesus cares for his followers - to be restored and in an intimate fellowship with Him.
Jesus asked Peter 3 times -Do you love me more than these? Do you love me? Do you love me?
More than these - “these” may refer to the immediate context - catch of fish, boat, fishing career, the people he is working with.
Do you love your career more than me? Do you love your family more than me? Do you love your business more than me?
Jesus did not ask, Simon son of Jonah, do you fear me? Or Simon, do you honor me? Or Simon, do you admire me? Jesus said, Simon son of Jonah, Do you love me?
What is in your heart for Jesus? Is it fear? Is it admiration? or LOVE?
Peter was hurt because of the repetition. But eventually it sunk deep in the heart of Peter as he was reminded the 3 times he denied Jesus. Truly he was
Peters restoration to fellowship is a wonderful reminder for us, that Jesus requires not perfection from us but humility and a surrendered heart
Peters love for Jesus may have failed at times, but it does not mean Peter is not a true follower. Compare Judas and Peter. Peter repented Judas did not.
Peter went to Jesus and received restoration, while Judas went to the Pharisees and their he met depression.
Implications:
Is your life marked with humility and surrender to Jesus?
Do you have a consistent prayer and devotional?
Do you quickly repent of your sins?

II. Church Ministry

John 21:15–17 NASB95
15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep.
a. Jesus cares for his followers - to care for those who are in the family of faith
Jesus love’s his sheep that he was willing to die for his sheep. And so, dili niya pwede e entrust ni bisan kinsa ang iyang mga sheep sa tao nga walay paghigugma kaniya.

Those that do not truly love Christ will never truly love the souls of men, or will naturally care for their state as they should;

Feed my Sheep - Shepherding is the duties and responsibilities given by Jesus to Peter.
Ministry motivated by Love to God and His people.
The responsibility of Christian leaders - 1 Peter 5:2
1 Peter 5:2 NASB95
2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;
Peter had a strong and intimate relationship with Jesus. Peters future action shows the effect of his transformation and spiritual growth. Acts
- Peter preached faithfully about Christ Acts 2:14
Acts 2:14 NASB95
14 But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words.
- Acts 4:1-4 - Peter preached and was jailed for it. (Acts 4:8)
Acts 4:1–4 NASB95
1 As they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple guard and the Sadducees came up to them, 2 being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead. 3 And they laid hands on them and put them in jail until the next day, for it was already evening. 4 But many of those who had heard the message believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
- Acts 5: 27-29 - Peter preached and jailed again (we must obey God rather than men) His loyalty is to His King and savior Jesus Christ!
Acts 5:27–29 NASB95
27 When they had brought them, they stood them before the Council. The high priest questioned them, 28 saying, “We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man’s blood upon us.” 29 But Peter and the apostles answered, “We must obey God rather than men.

If you are going to be used by God, he will take you through a multitude of experiences that are not meant for you at all; they are meant to make you useful in his hands.

Implications:
Are you involved in the local church ministry? If not yet, start to be involved....
Do you care about your brothers and sisters in the faith? Care by praying for them, Care by communicating with them and knowing their needs and how you can be of help. Care by joining A-group.
Someone in need mobantay sa panimalay o sa mga bata. Someone in need sa iyang sakyanan nga naguba, etc...
Use your God given gifts and talents, and resources in the church.

III. Evangelism Ministry

a. Jesus cares for his followers - not to be distracted from life’s purposes.
DISTRACTIONS caused by SUFFERING
John 21:18–19 NASB95
18 “Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.” 19 Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me!”
Suffering can distract us from fulfilling our purposes. Sufferings and fear of suffering can cause set-backs, stagnant Christian walk. Unable to bear fruit.
Jesus tells Peter of the kind of death he would glorify God.
Jesus said, follow me. behave like me....as I have went through suffering you too will go through suffering because of my name.
Suffering and death is expected when you are faithful to your calling. After all, the world hated Jesus first. Do not be surprised at this!
Accept suffering for the name of Christ! (1 Pet. 4:15)
1 Peter 4:15–16 NIV
15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.
The ultimate cause of suffering is sin, which has brought violence, disease and death into the world.
All suffering, is under the sovereign purpose of God, who is able to use it for his glory.
PERSECUTION
of Jeremiah - Jeremiah 38:6
Jeremiah 38:6 NASB95
6 Then they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchijah the king’s son, which was in the court of the guardhouse; and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. Now in the cistern there was no water but only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.
Example: Persecution & suffering of Daniel - Daniel 6:7
Daniel 6:7 NASB95
7 “All the commissioners of the kingdom, the prefects and the satraps, the high officials and the governors have consulted together that the king should establish a statute and enforce an injunction that anyone who makes a petition to any god or man besides you, O king, for thirty days, shall be cast into the lions’ den.
Daniel 6:16–17 NASB95
16 Then the king gave orders, and Daniel was brought in and cast into the lions’ den. The king spoke and said to Daniel, “Your God whom you constantly serve will Himself deliver you.” 17 A stone was brought and laid over the mouth of the den; and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the signet rings of his nobles, so that nothing would be changed in regard to Daniel.
Dan 6:19-23
Daniel 6:19–23 NASB95
19 Then the king arose at dawn, at the break of day, and went in haste to the lions’ den. 20 When he had come near the den to Daniel, he cried out with a troubled voice. The king spoke and said to Daniel, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you constantly serve, been able to deliver you from the lions?” 21 Then Daniel spoke to the king, “O king, live forever! 22 “My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths and they have not harmed me, inasmuch as I was found innocent before Him; and also toward you, O king, I have committed no crime.” 23 Then the king was very pleased and gave orders for Daniel to be taken up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den and no injury whatever was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.
Of Jesus and expected for his followers - John 15:20
John 15:20 NASB95
20 “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
VOLUNTARY ACCEPTANCE OF SUFFERING
By his followers - Hebrews 11:35
Hebrews 11:35 NASB95
35 Women received back their dead by resurrection; and others were tortured, not accepting their release, so that they might obtain a better resurrection;
Acts 5:41 - Rejoicing because of the suffering they endured for the name of Jesus!
Acts 5:41 NASB95
41 So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.

Character, Test of

You can judge a man pretty well by whether—if given a choice—he would ask for a light burden or a strong back.97

DISTRACTIONS because of LOOKING and COMPARING with others
John 21:20–22 NASB95
20 Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them; the one who also had leaned back on His bosom at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 So Peter seeing him said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!”
What about this man? - We tend to look and compare ourselves to others that we often get distracted of our purposes in life.
There are times we compare and feel insecure and inferior -
There are times we compare and feel proud and arrogant -
Both attitude will result to ineffectiveness in fulfilling the great commission set by Jesus Christ.

REFLECTION:

1. The motivation to follow Jesus must be LOVE.

2. Any ministry is born out of love for Jesus Christ.

- A genuine love for Jesus will create passion to serve the members of God’s family.

3. Distractions may come but we can fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith

PROPER RESPONSE:

1. Start developing a consistent prayer and devotional time with God.

2. Put the learning into action - Make a list of your God-given talents, gifts, and resources.

Survey where God has placed you and the people that God placed in your life…

3. Commit to use those resources to serve God and the people he put in to your life.

Each day I worked in the emergency room, I became more insensitive to people and their real needs. Five years of emergency room exposure took its toll. Then God intervened.

I was registering a young woman who had overdosed on drugs and attempted suicide. Her mother sat before me, unkempt and bleary eyed. She had been awakened in the night by the police to come to the hospital. She could only speak to me in a whisper.

“Hurry up!” I said to myself as she slowly gave me information. My impatience was raw as I finished the report and jumped to the machine to copy the medical cards. Then God stopped me, saying, “You didn’t even look at her.”

I felt his grief for the woman and her daughter then, and I bowed my head, saying, “I’m sorry, Lord. I am so sorry.”

I sat by the distraught woman and covered her hands with mine. I looked into her eyes with all the love that God could flood through me and said, “I care. Don’t give up.” She wept as she poured out her story. For years she had dealt with a rebellious daughter who was a single mom. Finally, after the weeping stopped, she thanked me for listening. Me—the coldhearted one with no feelings.

My attitude changed that night. My God, who so loved the world, broke that self-imposed barrier around my heart. Now he could reach out, not only to me, but to a lost and hurting woman.

My prayer is that may we find ourselves in a daily fellowship with the Lord Jesus Christ and motivated by His Love to not just live for ourselves but for the purposes of Christ and of the glory of the Father!
