The Power of Praise
Rev Dennis Peery
Summary: An expanded topical sermon outline on the value of praise in experiencing victory.
INTRODUCTION
Psalm 100:1–5 NIV
1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
There are some in the congregation who do not enter into worship. I¡¦m sure there are others that enter in out of routine.
There was a preacher that was trying to sell his horse. A potential buyer came to the church for a test ride. "before you start" the preacher said," you should know that this horse only responds to church talk. Go is praise the lord and stop is amen. "So the man on the horse says " Praise the lord," and the horse starts to trot. The man again says "Praise the lord," and the horse starts to gallop. Suddenly there is a cliff right in front of the horse and the man yells "Amen!!!" The horse stops just at the edge of the cliff. The man wipes the sweat from his brow and says, "Praise the Lord."
We know what we are to say, but it has lost its meaning.
Today I want to talk to you about the reasons why we should praise God and then we are going to look at the ways we are to praise God.
BODY
Reasons to Praise God
Almighty God is worthy of our praise and worship.
Psalm 18:3 NIV
3 I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies.
Revelation 5:11–12 NIV
11 Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. 12 In a loud voice they were saying: “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!”
Who God is - Worship
What God has done - Praise
What God has done for you - Thanksgiving
Praise and thanksgiving - is verbalized faith.
If you thank God after the fact, that’s gratitude. If you thank God before it happens, that’s faith.
If you don’t know how, begin to praise from the Psalms.
It is a book telling us how to praise God.
We are called to praise and worship God.
1 Peter 2:4–5 NIV
4 As you come to him, the living Stone—rejected by humans but chosen by God and precious to him—5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 2:9 NIV
9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Psalm 150:6 NIV
6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.
Worship changes us.
Jeremiah 2:5 NIV
5 This is what the Lord says: “What fault did your ancestors find in me, that they strayed so far from me? They followed worthless idols and became worthless themselves.
If you worship superficial things, your life becomes superficial.
If you worship perverted things your life becomes perverted.
If you worship evil things your life becomes evil.
If your worship the true God you become godly.
2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV
18 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.
Praise and worship ushers in the manifested presence of God.
Psalm 22:3 NIV
3 Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises.
Praise defeats our enemy.

2 Through the praise of children and infants you have established a stronghold against your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger.

5 Let his faithful people rejoice in this honor and sing for joy on their beds. 6 May the praise of God be in their mouths and a double-edged sword in their hands,
Our praise puts evil to flight.
