Why does John call the Word God?
Why does John call the Word God?
John knew the Old Testament and was simply conveying the truth already revealed and now explicitly revealed in the incarnation:
A. Genesis 1 records that “God said” 10 times
6 By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, and by the breath of his mouth all their host.
B. In the OT, the LORD speaks to the prophets (Isa 7:3), but elsewhere we see that “the word of the LORD came to Isaiah” (Is 38:4) as well as others (Jer 1:4, 13 ; Ezek 1:3)
C. The Word is also said to have appeared in many texts throughout the OT. (Genesis 15:1, 4; 1 Samuel 3:21; 1 Sam 15:10; 2 Sam 7:4; 2 Sam 24:11; 1 Kings 6:11–12; 2 Chron 12:7; Zech 7:4, 8; 8:1, 18)
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
E. He created everything.
E. He created everything.
The Word is the Creator and Originator of everything!
What about Arius’ assertion:
Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers 2.4: St. Athanasius: Select Works and Letters Chapter IV: That the Son Is Eternal and Increate
for when did man see light without the brightness of its radiance, that he may say of the Son, ‘There was once, when He was not,’ or ‘Before His generation He was not.’

35 So Jesus said to them, “The light is among you for a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you. The one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going.
36 While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” When Jesus had said these things, he departed and hid himself from them.
