We Are Much Like Our Father
There is a great story of these students at this prestigious military academy sometime in the 19th century. In which a great officer was invited to attend to see if he could help with some of the more reckless students.
The students had struck out in everything: lessons, study hours, drill. The principal handed the man a large number of telegrams which had come from the parents who had been wired regarding the situation. These messages were telescoped through which one could look into the various kinds of boys’ homes and the parental relationships connected with them.
One father wired his son, “I expect you to obey.” Another said, “If you are expelled from school, you need not come home.” Still another, “I’ll send you to an insane asylum if you are sent home.” Another said, “I’ll cut you off without a shilling if you disgrace the family.” But the best message was couched in these laconic words: “Steady as she goes my boy, steady! Father.”
There was a man who believed in his boy and probably there is no greater influence upon a boy than a father who respects the spirit of his boy and treats him like a man.
1 See how very much our Father loves us, for he calls us his children, and that is what we are! But the people who belong to this world don’t recognize that we are God’s children because they don’t know him.
The Apostle John is pointing out to the reader two very important points here in this verse and we are going to look at the first point today. 1. How special we are as God’s children. 2. How people of this lost world don’t recognize that we are God children because they don’t recognize God.
Looking at the first part of this verse we see that John even in his older age is still excited about what Jesus had revealed to him many years before as he walked with our Lord and Savior. Not only through Jesus words, but more so in his actions and deeds John sees Jesus love for his Fathers creation. Because He and His father are one. So therefore Jesus is acting on behalf of His father.
By healing the sick.
14 Jesus saw the huge crowd as he stepped from the boat, and he had compassion on them and healed their sick.
46 As he traveled through Galilee, he came to Cana, where he had turned the water into wine. There was a government official in nearby Capernaum whose son was very sick.
47 When he heard that Jesus had come from Judea to Galilee, he went and begged Jesus to come to Capernaum to heal his son, who was about to die.
48 Jesus asked, “Will you never believe in me unless you see miraculous signs and wonders?”
49 The official pleaded, “Lord, please come now before my little boy dies.”
50 Then Jesus told him, “Go back home. Your son will live!” And the man believed what Jesus said and started home.
51 While the man was on his way, some of his servants met him with the news that his son was alive and well.
52 He asked them when the boy had begun to get better, and they replied, “Yesterday afternoon at one o’clock his fever suddenly disappeared!”
53 Then the father realized that that was the very time Jesus had told him, “Your son will live.” And he and his entire household believed in Jesus.
By feeding the hungry
10 “Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. (The men alone numbered about 5,000.)
11 Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted.
12 After everyone was full, Jesus told his disciples, “Now gather the leftovers, so that nothing is wasted.”
14 When the people saw him do this miraculous sign, they exclaimed, “Surely, he is the Prophet we have been expecting!”
By forgiveness of sins
48 Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”
5 Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.”
10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”
11 “No, Lord,” she said. And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”
By taking care of the needs
27 However, we don’t want to offend them, so go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a large silver coin. Take it and pay the tax for both of us.”
19 And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
How do you know a good father? He always is there even when you are not sure he is there. Listen the young man at the academy was reminded by his father through 8 word. 8 words! Steady as she goes my boy, Steady! Father.
The most profound thing about this story is that the son understood his fathers message clearly. It wasn’t threatening, demeaning, belittling. It was a nautical call to action. Don’t lose course. When sailors were out at see in those earlier time period they only had a compass and maps and when the sailor at the helm was steering the ship he was fighting against the waves and winds, especially during a storm, it was easy to get off course and find yourself headed in the wrong direction. The captain who was usually more seasoned would instruct the sailors to stay focused, stay alert, stay the course that was set to arrive at the appropriate destination.
Listen the Captain is the father of that ship. He gives clear instructions that must be followed at all times for the survival of not just the person at the helm but all the mates on that vessel.
Steady as she goes he blurts out, even when the other are not sure the Captain is sure. Listen my friends. God is sure and he has given us the Word of God as our map and the Holy Spirit as our Compass and he is telling us steady as she goes! God your Father. The one who loves and cares for you. Father.
Now some of you maybe saying well Pastor P, I don’t know what a good father looks like I never had one, well you are not alone my friend, I didn’t either. I am not mad at my father, he is a good man from what I know of him.
But I made a choice that I wanted to be a better father. A Good father is there feeding his children when they are hungry, taking care of their needs when they are in need, protecting them when they need protection, attending to their illness when they are ill.
A good father, resembles our heavenly father. And our heavenly father is the greatest father of all us fathers.
17 For the law was given through Moses, but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness came through Jesus Christ.
First, Second, and Third John The Father’s Love: Children of God Now (1 John 3:1–3)
The love of God is described as a gift, which means that we do nothing to merit it.
Listen as a child of God you have done nothing to inherit this free gift from our Father, except to accept his son into your heart which bridged the gap between salvation and leading you from damnation. This is the greatest gift of all.
Because when it’s all said and done a great father starts with his presence and not presents. He is not concerned with these earthly things that will pass away! He is concerned with that which will be around eternally.
17 And this world is fading away, along with everything that people crave. But anyone who does what pleases God will live forever.
What pleases God? Salvation through His son and then being obedient to Him.
We run a powerful race and in this race we run we must learn to be Steady in our walk with God, Steady in our time to study His Word, Steady in our prayer life Steady in our commitment to his church and his children, Steady in our giving of ourselves, our time and our resources and steady not to loose focus on his love for us as He has adopted us into His family and we are His children and we are much like our father.
Close - When we accepted Christ into our hearts our DNA changed and we all of a sudden looked like him, we decided that we no longer would look, nor act like our previous father of this world (Satan) we turned from the ways that our sin nature called us to daily and we turned to what God our heavenly father called us to a life of righteousness and love. I’ve seen my brother love his two adopted kids more then their natural fathers and he would do anything for them! This is much like God. He would do anything for you if you just accept His offer of allowing him to adopt you into our family. John 3:16 tells that story well my friend, won’t you listen with an open heart and accept that invitation of salvation and walk away from that damnation. Salvation is here and you can be adopted by a father who really does love you and wants too show you.
