Why am I not afraid of needles, but cringe at the thought of stitches? Why have I only ever had butterfly strips and bandaids?
Did you know that much of who we are today has been developed by not only your experiences, but even how you recall or remember those experiences?
When I was young .... my best guess is 5 yrs old.
-I went to swimming lessons
-Bobbing up and down in the water
-grabbing the side of the pool pushed myself up to say hi to my teacher
-Boom hit my chin on the side of the pool
-a few mins later practicing the backstroke with a swim teacher they saw my chin was split
-Went into the dr’s to get stitches, but I squirmed and struggled so much I wouldn’t allow the dr to give me stitches so they just put a butterfly strip on it and I went home.
I’m not afraid of needles, but I have never had a stitch....always butterfly strips or bandaids.
Semantic Memory- Facts that I recall because they have been taught i. e. Washington D.C. is our country’s capitol and Washington is a state
Episodic Memory
Specific events involve the recollection of particular moments from an individual’s autobiographical history. Recalling the first time you dove into the ocean is an example.
General events involve recalling the feelings associated with a certain type of experience. Recalling what it is like to dive into the ocean in general is an example of this type of episodic memory. You may not remember each occasion wherein you dove into the ocean. But you do have a general recollection of having dived many times into ocean—upon which your feeling is based.
Information intricately tied to a person’s experiences constitute personal facts. Knowing the color of your first bicycle and the name of your first dog are some examples.
Flashbulb memories are exceptionally vivid and highly detailed ‘snapshots’ of moments or circumstances wherein you learned important or surprising pieces of news (Brown & Kulik, 1977). Recalling the moment you heard about the death of a family member or a major tragedy such as the 9/11 attacks might be an example. It should be noted that there is much debate as to whether the vividness of a flashbulb memory stems from a virtual flash produced by the emotional intensity of a specific experience, or from a propensity to rehearse consequential moments—which can immensely strengthen the memory.
Close your eyes......and focus on one of your favorite memories.
see where you are in your minds eye
-Where are you?
-as you breathe in think about what you would be smelling, grass, trees, ocean air,
-what are the sounds?
-what is your favorite memory of being in that place? Or with the people you were with? or the activity you were doing?
Finally I want you to think about where you were when 9/11 happened.
-Where were you sitting when you found out what happened?
-Maybe you experienced it in real time....you were in New York
-What were your initial thoughts?
-What were your feelings?
-How did 9/11 affect life as you lived it?
-Did you commit to never forget?
-What are the actions you take to remember it?
-Do your children hold the same remembrance of that event as you do?
Do you know that Israel went through the same process as a country in their covenant with God as we just walked through here in that last few minutes of talking about memories of the past.

Explanation

Joshua 24:1–15 NLT
Then Joshua summoned all the tribes of Israel to Shechem, including their elders, leaders, judges, and officers. So they came and presented themselves to God. Joshua said to the people, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: Long ago your ancestors, including Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the Euphrates River, and they worshiped other gods. But I took your ancestor Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him into the land of Canaan. I gave him many descendants through his son Isaac. To Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. To Esau I gave the mountains of Seir, while Jacob and his children went down into Egypt. “Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I brought terrible plagues on Egypt; and afterward I brought you out as a free people. But when your ancestors arrived at the Red Sea, the Egyptians chased after you with chariots and charioteers. When your ancestors cried out to the Lord, I put darkness between you and the Egyptians. I brought the sea crashing down on the Egyptians, drowning them. With your very own eyes you saw what I did. Then you lived in the wilderness for many years. “Finally, I brought you into the land of the Amorites on the east side of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I destroyed them before you. I gave you victory over them, and you took possession of their land. Then Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, started a war against Israel. He summoned Balaam son of Beor to curse you, but I would not listen to him. Instead, I made Balaam bless you, and so I rescued you from Balak. “When you crossed the Jordan River and came to Jericho, the men of Jericho fought against you, as did the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Girgashites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. But I gave you victory over them. And I sent terror ahead of you to drive out the two kings of the Amorites. It was not your swords or bows that brought you victory. I gave you land you had not worked on, and I gave you towns you did not build—the towns where you are now living. I gave you vineyards and olive groves for food, though you did not plant them. “So fear the Lord and serve him wholeheartedly. Put away forever the idols your ancestors worshiped when they lived beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt. Serve the Lord alone. But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord.”
Memory was one of Israel’s biggest challenges
-God gave them law that was a covenant decision
-And through time there was a collective decision and memory that was established to participate in the covenant
-passover
-feast of first fruits
-sabbath year for the land
God was creating Episodic Memories
-Mother and daughter making bread for the passover
-The mother now telling the daughter all of the stories of them leaving Israel
-What it was like to run out of water and watch Moses throw a stick in the water and it was good to drink.
-To recount how their clothes never wore out over 40 years.....God supplied everything they needed over the whole 40 years and through out all of their history.
-Father and son working together in the field to bring in the first fruits
-The son would ask dad why are we sacrificing so much of our crop?
-How the Father would then explain this was part of their sacrifice to the Lord to thank him for their rescue and provision in the new land he gave them.
-Let me tell you about when Moses hit a rock and water came out of it.
Judges 2:10–15 NLT
After that generation died, another generation grew up who did not acknowledge the Lord or remember the mighty things he had done for Israel. The Israelites did evil in the Lord’s sight and served the images of Baal. They abandoned the Lord, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They went after other gods, worshiping the gods of the people around them. And they angered the Lord. They abandoned the Lord to serve Baal and the images of Ashtoreth. This made the Lord burn with anger against Israel, so he handed them over to raiders who stole their possessions. He turned them over to their enemies all around, and they were no longer able to resist them. Every time Israel went out to battle, the Lord fought against them, causing them to be defeated, just as he had warned. And the people were in great distress.
There is a country music star from the 80’s and 90’s twho wrote about his experience with both semantic and episodic memory Aaron Tippin who wrote
Now Daddy didn't like trouble, but if it came along Everyone that knew him knew which side that he'd be on He never was a hero, or this county's shinin' light But you could always find him standin' up For what he thought was right
He'd say, "You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything You've got to be your own man not a puppet on a string Never compromise what's right and uphold your family name You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything"
Now we might've been better off or owned a bigger house If Daddy had done more givin' in or a little more backin' down But we always had plenty just living his advice "Whatever you do today you'll have to sleep with tonight"
He'd say, "You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything You've got to be your own man, not a puppet on a string Never compromise what's right, and uphold your family name You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything"
And I know that things are different than they were in Daddy's day But I still believe what makes a man really hasn't changed
You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything You've got to be your own man, not a puppet on a string Never compromise what's right, and uphold your family name You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything You've got to stand for something or you'll fall for anything
There needs to be a decision
As people of God we are constantly living out the pieces of the story God has lived out with us.
Living in a way that we can create places in life to pass down our faith
-ordinary places in life that can take on a holy importance
One of the biggest places in my life where this happened was with a cup of coffee, a bible and a coffee table.
-Every house I have ever lived in with my parents I can tell you where my dad would have his quiet time with his Bible, cup of coffee and the coffee table
-First thing when I would wake up I would walk by my dad having his quiet time
-I grew up seeing and asking questions about what he was doing.
-this episodic memory lives on in my life with my bible, coffee and a coffee table
What pieces of the faith do we want to pass on to our children?
Benediction
Numbers 6:22–26 NLT
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons to bless the people of Israel with this special blessing: ‘May the Lord bless you and protect you. May the Lord smile on you and be gracious to you. May the Lord show you his favor and give you his peace.’
