The Greatest Commandment
The Greatest Commandment
34 But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.
35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying,
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
Intro: Our love for God should be greatest love we have for anyone. VS 37 is one of those verses that should be a great part of our lives.
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart. with all your soul, with all your mind”
Jesus made this statement just a few days before the cross.
a. What Jesus says here is for you and me. For every person who has made a personal commitment to Jesus. But, do you really love the lord with all your heart, soul, mind?
Jesus had arrived in Jerusalem at the time of the passover. This time he was different. . He has entered the city and been hailed as the Messiah, the deliverer of the nation from Roman bondage, the One who would come to set Israel in freedom and liberty, the One who would come and make all things right.
He is in the Temple when the Sadducees confront Him. They were a religious party that said the is not Resurrection. VS 23. Their discussion with Jesus didn’t turn to good for them.
Then the Pharisees step up to the plate, they think that they have a home run hitter in place.
34 But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together.
There was no love loss between the Pharisees and the Sadducees. Jesus had silenced the Sadducees.
Silenced: muzzled.
25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”
Be quiet:
39 Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.
Peace, be still.
a. He muzzled them. Today, He duck taped their mouths. He did it with words words of wisdom.
b. He silenced them. He brought their argument to an utter end where they were absolutely without another sound, they were without another thought, without another idea, without another retort.
c.Jesus done the same things to the Pharisees. When Jesus was confronted by them with the woman caught in Adultery. The word muzzled is not used, by when they “convicted by their own conscience.
9 Then those who heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning with the oldest even to the last. And Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.
d. They were critical of the Words of Jesus. They wanted to find fault with any thing He said. But the great thing is, God’s word always wins.
“They gathered together” Elab.
e. Not the first time the Pharisees came after Jesus. They failed over and over, but they were determainted to get get of Jesus.
f. When they heard that the Sadducees had failed they would give it a try. if they could get to say something that help them to bring charged against Him, then could bring Him down.
35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying,
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
They had gathered together, and one of them (lawyer) would question Jesus. (He was the best)
a. Not a lawyer like we would think. interpreter and teacher of the Mosaic law. Elan613 laws.
b. He didn’t ask Jesus this to get an answer, he wanted to put Jesus in a compromisisng position where they would have gronds to acsuse Him so they could put Him away.
VS “testing” Him” put a question to Him, putting Him on trial
c. By the way, if you really love someone you want always be looking for the wrong in them.

Amplified Bible Chapter 22
kind of commandment is great and important (the principal kind) in the Law? [Some commandments are light—which are heavy?]
Which is the heaviest? 613 laws. To do, not to do. Heavy light. Imprtant and not so important.
a. We hear today, while thats just a little sin so its no big deal, that sin isn’t that bad. People will debate about how bad a sin is. This lawyer was trying to get Jesus into a deate over the law.
b. Jesus is going to make one of the greatest statements in Gods word.
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’
38 This is the first and great commandment.
39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
Jesus quites from 2 places in the OT
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one!
5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.
18 You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.
LOOK AT VS 37
Love God first. Our love for God is greater then. Husband, wife, kids, grandkids.
a. Our love for God has to take top priority in our lives.
ALL your heart, ALL your soul, ALL you mind, Mark adds ALL your strength.
Heart: The seat of our emotions. From the heart proceed the issues of life.
23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.
Soul: The soul is the spiritual part of our lives.
Mind: The mind intellect. I beleive we can love God with all our minds when we spend more time in His word. Gods word in His love letters to us.
2. We are to love God with our whole being. God is our creator, provider, our judge. He has the right to command us to love Him.
a. We love Him above everything, Material possessions. All relationships.
b. Love for God has to be a real sincere love.
John 3:16 For God SO loved the world.
3. When Jesus made this statement, He was putting all the commadments into one word, LOVE.
40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”
15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments.
a. If you love God, you should have no problem keeping His commandments.
b. No problem giving $.
c. No problem tellings how they can be saved.
d. No problem serving God.
e. Sun Rise service. Chairs set up, sound sytem set up. Also put back up. Greet people, welcome people. Because you love God, and want to show Gods love to others.
2. Love God with ALL Heart, soul, mind. Why?
a. Our love for God is a responce to His love for us.
19 We love Him because He first loved us.
b. If God loved us so much that He gave His Son to die for our sins, our wickedness, then we should love Him back.
3. Our love for God, and our love for others go together.
39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’
a. If you love God, you have to love others.
Mt 5:44 Love our enimes.
a. “Love you neighbor as yourself”
b. Last week Martha. Self centered. She wasn’t showing much love for Mary.
c. It can’t be all about self, my way. We have to love others and it must show.
35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Song: They will know we are Christians by love.
d. Do people you come in contact with know you are a Christians by your Love? Not do they know you are a Christian becasue you go to church. Or because you say some churchie words. But by your love.
8 He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
a. If you are a part of Gods family, there should some evidence of it because you are Christ like. Your love for others will show. Gods love for us shows.
b. Our love for others show when we love not matter what. Not I love, but......
c. You love people like they are. (Not their sinful life style)
d. Love people for you they not, not trying to change them into someone else. (Birthday card)
2. Love for God, and you love for other go together. READ VS AGIAN.
a. You can’t have bitternes in your heart towords someone and love God. You have bitterness in your heart and come to church and sing “Oh how I love Jesus”
b. You can only love others by the spirit of God being in you.
32 So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He.
33 And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”
34 Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” But after that no one dared question Him.
He was close to a spiritual understanding.
28 Then Agrippa said to Paul, “You almost persuade me to become a Christian.”
