Relating to Government God's Way: Submission to Government - 1 Peter 2:13-17
I. God wants us to submit to government whenever we can (13-14)
A. The Reference to Our Position as a Sojourner - 13 (“Therefore”)
B. The Concept
1. Meaning of “Submit yourselves” (same word as subject in Romans 13)
2. To every ordinance (instituted authority) of man - what are they?
13 Let every soul be asubject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are appointed by God. 2 Therefore whoever resists bthe authority resists the ordinance of God, and those who resist will 1bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to evil. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? cDo what is good, and you will have praise from the same. 4 For he is God’s minister to you for good. But if you do evil, be afraid; for he does not bear the sword in vain; for he is God’s minister, an avenger to execute wrath on him who practices evil. 5 Therefore dyou must be subject, not only because of wrath ebut also for conscience’ sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for they are God’s ministers attending continually to this very thing. 7 fRender therefore to all their due: taxes to whom taxes are due, customs to whom customs, fear to whom fear, honor to whom honor.
3 Remind them ato be subject to rulers and authorities, to obey, bto be ready for every good work, 2 to speak evil of no one, to be peaceable, gentle, showing all humility to all men.
C. The Inclusion (Varied Government Formats)
D. The Role and Method
II. God wants us to relate to government to do God’s will (15)
15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men—
III. God wants us to relate to government with the right motivations (16-17)
Believers have been ransomed by Christ’s blood (1:18–19) and are no longer subject to the futile lifestyle characteristic of this world.60 Hence, the submission of believers is never servile or rendered out of weakness.
24 tWhen they had come to 8Capernaum, those who received the 9temple tax came to Peter and said, “Does your Teacher not pay the temple tax?”
25 He said, “Yes.”
And when he had come into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, “What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from ustrangers?”
26 Peter said to Him, “From strangers.”
Jesus said to him, “Then the sons are free. 27 Nevertheless, lest we offend them, go to the sea, cast in a hook, and take the fish that comes up first. And when you have opened its mouth, you will find a 1piece of money; take that and give it to them for Me and you.”
