What do we do with God’s Word?
What do we do with God’s Word?
James teaches us how to respond to Scripture.
Theme verse of James.
We’ve not heard the Word unless we’ve obeyed the Word.
There’s a difference between listening and hearing!
We are commanded to “be” — it’s about our character! Also, present tense imperative, so continually be.
Character: who you are when no one else is looking!
James isn’t saying to be willing to do something. James is saying do something.
When we come and hear the Word of God taught but do not obey Christ, we are deceived.
Ultimately, you live a lie that even you begin to believe!
How many people do you know that “love Jesus” at camp and on Sunday’s and go to every youth event, but whenever they’re not at church, Jesus is could not be further from their minds?!
Have a good look in the mirror!
Have a good look in the mirror!
The Word of God provides us with a glimpse of what we really look like.
For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
But, when we refuse to “hear” what the Word says, we walk away and forget what we look like. This doesn’t mean our appearance slips our mind, but instead we get complete amnesia concerning what we look like!
Verse 25 gives three clues as to how we should respond to God’s word:
1. Read God’s Word with a desire to learn.
2. Follow through with your commitments to God.
3. Find a way to remember what you read.
God promises to bless the person who takes the necessary steps to obey His Word! Bless means that God will give meaning and substance to your life.
