I have always found genealogy fascinating and interesting. As a child, I would listen to my grandparents tell stories of their parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. They provided a link to my family history that I hope to pass on to my children. While I find interest in my family history, there is another genealogy I love to study. I thoroughly enjoy hearing about my spiritual heritage. The Psalmist explained, “One generation shall praise Your works to another, and shall declare Your mighty acts” (Psalms 145:4). God desires that families pass on a spiritual inheritance to their descendants.
This concept became real to me when I watched home videos with Bekah’s parents a couple of years ago. We watched the baptism of her sister. She was around six or seven years old and the entire family surrounded the baptistry. She went in the water, but when she came up she was speaking in tongues. Both sets of grandparents, her parents, aunts, uncles, and friends rejoiced at what God did. As I watched, tears filled my eyes as I thought about my children. As an upcoming father, I want to declare God’s works to my children. I want them to have a genealogy of faithfulness and dependence on the Lord.
Likewise, in our church, God wants to display His works to future generations. This month we will celebrate our 70th anniversary as a church. For seven decades, God has remained faithful. Now, we are in a unique position as a body of believers. We have to continue to seek God so that He might do something supernatural in our times.
I often pray for the children of our church. I want them to experience the faithfulness of God and the presence of the Holy Spirit. As we celebrate seventy years, will you join me in praying that God will continue to touch generations at our church? We have a mandate from scripture to praise God’s good works from generation to generation. He has been good in the past, He is good right now, and His goodness will endure to all generations.
