Jesus could scarcely use a more graphic term to bring out the lowliness his people must seek. It is in lowly service that Christians find their true fulfilment. They follow a Master who took the form of a servant and lived all his earthly days in humble obscurity. The way forward for them is in humility and lowliness. To set one’s heart on eminence is to lose the heart of the Christian way. This does not, of course, mean that among the followers of Christ there are to be no leaders, none in high places. It means that those who take the lead among them are to be humble, people seeking not personal success but the opportunity of doing lowly service.
