Your own Ten Commandments
Matt 21 - Who did what God asked?
Do we have to keep the ten commandments?
48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
Why wouldn’t you want to keep the 10 commandments?
Pray
Introductory Notes:
Applied to Individuals but in community.
This is being spoken to the entire congregation
without others, some of these are not possible.
Reveal God’s Character
All laws reveal the character of the the lawgiver
To give just one example, consider the extensive federal regulations that govern handicapped access to public buildings. What do these laws tell us about the society that made them? They tell us that Americans want to include the disabled in the ordinary events of public life.
Exhibit the Great Commandment: Love God and Others
37 He said to him, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. 38 This is the greatest and most important command. 39 The second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. 40 All the Law and the Prophets depend on these two commands.”
There is a positive and negative aspect to every command.
by saying don’t do this, it is saying do this and vice versa.
Begin with Who God is:
1 Then God spoke all these words: 2 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
Everything is based on God’s grace.
LOVE GOD (1-4 — conduct towards God)
The First Two Commandments: Worship God
No God’s besides me
No Idols
Do not worship idols
do not make idols (images) of me
These lead to the rest. All the others are kept these are kept.
Primarily individual but has corporate implications
Three & Four: Honoring God (also has societal implications)
Do not misuse my name / Use his name correctly and with reverence
Do not dishonor God’s name. Do not do things in His name that he has not called you to do.
Work & Rest rightly / don’t mix these up, emphasize one over the other.
Letting God be God
Letting Humans be Human
Imaging God well.
LOVE OTHERS (Conduct towards others)
Honor your parents (authority) / don’t dishonor them
Promise: It will go well in the land
Good societies, come from good families
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, because this is right. 2 Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, 3 so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.
Do not murder / preserve life
Doesn’t exclude all kind of killing
Jesus — murder starts in your heart as anger.
Anger comes from injustice real or perceived.
21 “You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment. 22 But I tell you, everyone who is angry with his brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Whoever insults his brother or sister, will be subject to the court. Whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be subject to hellfire.
26 Be angry and do not sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and don’t give the devil an opportunity.
Do not commit adultery (do not have sex outside of marriage / do have sex inside marriage
Any form of sexual activity outside of marriage is immoral and against God’s designs
Also against God’s character
God has pledged himself to us, he will not love another.
27 “You have heard that it was said, Do not commit adultery. 28 But I tell you, everyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Do not steal / but give generously
28 Let the thief no longer steal. Instead, he is to do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share with anyone in need.
Do not lie
Do not give false testimony / gossip / slander
25 Therefore, putting away lying, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, because we are members of one another.
DO NOT COVET
The tenth commandment disallows covetousness. The general idea of the root ḥāmad (GK 2773) is “to desire earnestly, long after, covet.” In the parallel passage in Deuteronomy 5:21, it is paralleled by titʾawweh (“to set one’s desire” on something).
This reveals that it goes down to the heart level
consequently they all do.
For where do murder, adultery, theft and slander come from?
18 But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and this defiles a person. 19 For from the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual immoralities, thefts, false testimonies, slander.
This is what Jesus taught
It’s what Paul taught:
7 What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! But, I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.
What we need a savior.
We need a substitute
We need a new heart.
Application
Should we keep the 10 commandments?
We can’t keep them on our own.
Do we want to keep them?
This comes from God
Jesus kept them all perfectly all the time
He is making us perfect like him
he does this through suffering.
Do you want to LIVE!?

28 “What do you think? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, ‘My son, go work in the vineyard today.’ 29 “He answered, ‘I don’t want to,’ but later he changed his mind and went. 30 Then the man went to the other and said the same thing. ‘I will, sir,’ he answered, but he didn’t go. 31 Which of the two did his father’s will?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you didn’t believe him. Tax collectors and prostitutes did believe him; but you, when you saw it, didn’t even change your minds then and believe him.
