2 Peter 2:1–2 NASB95
1 But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. 2 Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned;
2 Peter 2:1 KJV 1900
1 But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
Damnable doctrines or heresies.
Heresies here is more appropriately define as Teachings held by a factional religious party which deny some aspect of established doctrine.
more over faction, parties, or cults.
We talk often about false teacher but what about false converts or those who follow false teaching and teachers?
Matthew 24:4 NASB95
4 And Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one misleads you.
Notice Jesus places the responsibility on the believers not to be mislead.
See to it.
I. The devil is a lair
John 8:44 NASB95
44 “You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies.
There is a real attack today on truth.
We talk Wednesday about postmodernism and the postmodern man who does not believe in absolute truth.
the assault against absolute truth is an assault against the character of God Himself
Jesus says
John 14:6 NASB95
6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
All truth is found in God and the revelation of Himself in creation, the Law, and the Son of God.
and the devil desire is to stop us from walking in the truth.
Jesus says,
John 8:32 NASB95
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.”
so what does the devil do? lie!
3 lies of the devil
There is not absolute truth
Truth is relative and based upon ones own reasoning
there is no ultimate and transcendent reality
Conclusion to those who believe the lies : therefore there is no God.
Suppress truth doesn't bring forth freedom, only bondage.
Fyodor Dostoevsky who wrote the poem the The Grand Inquisitor about Christ coming back to Earth in the time of the Inquisition. says,
“If there is no God all things are permissible.” Fyodor Dostoevsky
in essence, Existentialism, which is the freedom to experience all things.
“When the sense of religion is shaken off, all kinds of wickedness is eagerly rushed into.” Stephen Charnock
II. The devil does not want us to know the character of God.
Psalm 11:7 NASB95
7 For the Lord is righteous, He loves righteousness; The upright will behold His face.
the Morality of man is based in the unchanging nature of God.
God is righteous!
The culture would look at the experience of man to determine the righteousness of God.
They question: “how can a good God allow bad things to happen to good people?”
They conclude: God must not be holy or righteous
The result: He can not be trust.
Thus, if He is not holy, i do not have to pursue holiness.
Psalm 89:14 NASB95
14 Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; Lovingkindness and truth go before You.
Righteousness comes out of God’s nature
Holiness is His nature, righteousness is the expression of His nature.
in essence Holiness is who He is, righteousness is what He does.
He can be trusted.
“If the universe is not governed by an absolute goodness, than all our efforts in the long run are hopeless.” C.S. Lewis
III. The devil does not want you to pursue truth. He does not want you to pursue Holiness
Any doctrine that doesn't teach the pursuit of Holiness is a damnable doctrine and will produce false converts.
Hebrews 12:14–17 NKJV
14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For you know that afterward, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no place for repentance, though he sought it diligently with tears.
People will not pursue peace if they believe peace is not possible
people will not pursue Holiness if they do not think holiness is possible.
Jesus’ return will bring forth the full manifestation of peace and holiness, but until then, we press towards the mark.
without which not man will see the Lord.
be care that no one fall short of the grace of God.
How do you fall short? by not pursuing holiness.
Holiness is not perfection, it is a condition of the heart. its desire.. and it manifest itself in righteous action.
the righteous man knows
Proverbs 14:12 NASB95
12 There is a way which seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.
he also know jesus is the way, the truth and the life…
he turns aways from sensuality which maligns the truth because feeling are exulted above truth.
he is not a fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.
