“WHOLE HEART”
“WHOLE HEART”
This story can also be found in (Matt. 19:16–22) and (Luke 18:18–23).
When all the facts concerning this man are considered, it becomes clear that this young man had many things going for him in his life.
He’s Young
He’s Wealthy—This young man has plenty of the world’s goods, v. 22.
He can provide for a family.
He has Morals…
Here was a young man who could follow the rules...
He believed in integrity.
He has Position
Luke says that he is a ruler, with possible ties to the synagogue (18:18).
He’s also spiritual.
As Jesus was starting out on his way to Jerusalem, a man came running up to him, knelt down, and asked, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
WE CAN DO EVERYTHING THE RIGHT WAY
WE CAN DO EVERYTHING THE RIGHT WAY
As this young man comes to Jesus, he gets several things right.
He comes to the right Person
He’s obviously heard of Jesus and knows that if anyone can help him, Jesus can.
He comes in the right way
He comes running, because he knows the urgency of the situation.
Nothing in life is as urgent as your salvation!
He also came kneeling.
“Want to get Jesus’ attention?”
He comes for the right purpose.
This young man comes to Jesus looking for an honest answer to a very serious question he had weighing on his heart.
He goes about doing everything the right way, only to come up with the wrong answer.
“Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: Do not murder; do not commit adultery; do not steal; do not bear false witness; do not defraud; honor your father and mother.”
‘NO ONE IS GOOD—EXCEPT GOD ALONE’
‘NO ONE IS GOOD—EXCEPT GOD ALONE’
He could flatter and charm everybody else…but you can’t do that with God.
BUT COME UP WITH THE WRONG ANSWER
BUT COME UP WITH THE WRONG ANSWER
He came to Jesus looking for the truth, He just didn’t know it was a two-way street.
When Jesus ask if he knows the commandments, the young man says, “Of course, I haven’t broken one of them since I was tadpole.”
Do you any of us really believe that?
You think Jesus did?
Jesus can be pretty sneaky too though…
Did you catch that new commandment He slipped in there?
Jesus tells the man, “Do not defraud.”
Was it a mistake? No (Jesus doesn’t make mistakes.)
So if it was intentional, then it has to mean something.
I know defraud means to deceive…but who was he deceiving…his people? (possibly)
I believe the real answer lies in this next part…
Looking at the man, Jesus felt genuine love for him. “There is still one thing you haven’t done,” he told him. “Go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
YOU LACK ONE THING
YOU LACK ONE THING
In the Greek verb for lack, or ‘need’, there is a probe at a deeper level.
The young man’s main problem was his wealth (see v. 22 and note).
Naturally, Jesus wanted to free him from it.
He tells him to give it all to the poor and then he would be ready to know the Way to Salvation.
His unwillingness to share his possessions showed that he did not love his neighbor as himself.
From the outside, the young man fit the bill of a good and righteous man…but on the inside he was just as bankrupt as the rest of us.
You see, the one person the man was deceiving the most was himself.
In order for the young man to find the answer he so desperately seeks, he must first acknowledge what is standing in his way…SIN.
Instead, of confessing and unloading the burden, he decides to carry with him as he turns away from the only One who can save him from it.
If he would’ve just been honest about the way he felt and confessed to Jesus what Jesus already knew was in his heart, this story would’ve had a happier ending.
The only thing he needed to “do” (or any of us) was accept God’s Grace.
Jesus met the man half way, but in the end the man found that he wasn’t ready to put his whole heart into trusting Jesus.
You will seek me and find me when you search for me with all your heart.
