Welcome
Intro -
What is the message from God to us as believers
I don’t think much has changed since God spoke to Adam and Eve
Now the specifics have changed but the underlying message hasn’t
This morning we look all the way to Genesis 3
We know the story of Creation
We have talked about it
There are 7 days of creation
God worked for the first 6 and the last day the seventh day He rested
It is important for us to know that as He uses that as an example to us later on in scripture
But this morning we come to the Chapter than basically changed the course of history as we know it
The reason we are the way we are is written in Genesis chapter 3
But before we get to 3 we need to get some of the instruction and back story in Chapter 2
15 Then the Lord God took the man and put him into the garden of Eden to cultivate it and keep it. 16 The Lord God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”
God gives them specific direction and instructions to follow
God was very clear
There was no misinterpreting that
There was no not getting the clear information from the God of the universe
But then they are tempted
Satan then begins to tempt them and ask questions
Because we are weak, doubt is planted in their minds
But that wasn’t the sin
Remember God had given them very very clear instruction
They disobey and eat the fruit
1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’ ” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 “For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings.
Eve looks and sees the fruit looks good and knows that it will make you wise
So why not eat it and then she give it to her husband
And because of that disobedience there are consequences
14 The Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly you will go, And dust you will eat All the days of your life; 15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.” 16 To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain in childbirth, In pain you will bring forth children; Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he will rule over you.” 17 Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life. 18 “Both thorns and thistles it shall grow for you; And you will eat the plants of the field; 19 By the sweat of your face You will eat bread, Till you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return.” 20 Now the man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all the living. 21 The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them. 22 Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— 23 therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken.
This is the consequences
That have disobeyed God and because of that
Something had to die to cover that Sin
The serpent would crawl on his belly
Their would be more pain in Child birth
Man would spend his days fighting with the ground
They are kicked out of the garden
They heard the direction from God and completely disregarded it
Know you and I can sit here and give reasons as to why they disobeyed God
But it doesn’t take away the fact they were disobedient to Gods direction
And church once they disobeyed God we have struggled with that particular sin every since
12 Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned—
Church because of that sin all the way back in the garden
We were open to sin
You weren’t born a sinner but you were born with a default sin nature
Because of that disobedience
And church we have yet to learn our lesson
Through the rest of the Old Testament we see that God speaks to people and they have the option to obey or disobey and more often than not they disobey and there are consequences
In the story of Ester
The Hebrews were almost put to death because of a guy named Haman
Haman was part of the Agagite
The Hebrews were supposed to wipe them out earlier in their history but did not obey God
In story of Jonah
Jonah was supposed to go to a city and share the Gospel
You know what happened
Jonah refused and ends up in the belly of a whale, and then goes to the city to share the Gospel
Throughout the Old Testament Gods chosen people continually are disobeying and there are consequences for that
That is why in the OT the Nation of Israel are called a stiff necked people
A people who are obstinate and refusing to obey the God of the universe
When God calls us to do something church we need to do it
When God gives us direction we need to follow that direction
Church that is why in the New Testament
Paul who writes the majority of the New Testament
Cautions us to follow Gods rule
Jesus Himself takes the original 10 commandments that we turned into 600 something commandments and makes it 2
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 “This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 “The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”
Church we are called to obey these commands from Jesus’s lips
Everything can be traced back to these 2 commands
Church if that is not simple enough for you Paul breaks it down and even gives real world advice
Because we as a people are susceptible to being disobedient
Look all the back in Genesis 2
God gave us a command
Genesis 3 we disobeyed that command
And then fast forward into the New Testament
Paul writes this
1 But realize this, that in the last days difficult times will come. 2 For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, revilers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 unloving, irreconcilable, malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, haters of good, 4 treacherous, reckless, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power; Avoid such men as these.
We used this last week
But the very end Paul warns Timothy to avoid these people
We are to not be in fellowship with these people
We are to share the Gospel with the Lost but church we are not to fellowship with them
We are to walk after Jesus
If we so struggled with being obedient Paul wouldn’t have told almost ever church to Listen to his words and to run after Jesus
But church because we so struggle with being obedient
Paul writes
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. 17 For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
This is what it looks like when we are being disobedient
idolatry
strife
outburst of anger
dissension
drunkenness
carousing around
Paul even says that he was warned the church about these things
We are to flee from these things
This is what it looks like if we are disobedient
Paul then explains for those of us who struggle and what to make sure of what it looks like if we are being obedient
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit.
Paul explains that this is what it looks like if you are being obedient to God
IF you are walking with Jesus it should be evident in your life
If you are not walking with Jesus it is evident in your life
Paul clearly shares that
And the reason why Paul shares it so much church is because all the way back in Genesis 2 when God gave Adam instruction
Adam then completely disregards God instruction for his life
And we have struggle with being obedient to God every since
Some of you may sit in this church today playing like you have it all together but you know right now you are being disobedient
You have read this scripture and you are feeling a bit uneasy this morning
That is a good thing
That is the Holy Spirit convicting you of the Sin in your life
The sin of being disobedient to what God has called you to do in your life
The answer is to Repent and run toe Jesus
So we will call the Band up
As we move into our invitation
If you are here today and you are being disobedient in your personal relationship with Jesus would you be obedient this morning and come to the altar and repent and seek Jesus
Or if you don’t have a personal relationship with Jesus would you come to the front and speak with someone
Or maybe there is other business between you and God this morning
The altar is open
