As most of you know we have been studying through the theme “Names of Jesus” with the hope of learning more about our Lord and Savior through the names and/or titles given him. This in turn helps us draw closer to him by knowing him better. Now up to this point we have focused our attention on Jesus names of Only Begotten, Jesus, Lord, and Son of Man. Today we will turn our attention to the name given by the “unclean spirits” to Jesus, the “Holy One of God.” Three times we find Jesus called this and with so few let’s read each of them. The first two are of the same account. Jesus was teaching in Capernaum, on the Sabbath, at their synagogue when a man with a demon or unclean spirit enters. This demon says in both accounts Mark 1:24 and Luke 4:34…
24 “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”
In John 6 we have Jesus feeding the 5,000 and the people striving to take him and make him their king. He escapes and goes up to the mountain but his disciples get into a boat and head for Capernaum. This is when Jesus meets them by walking on the water. The next day many of those that were fed the day before seek Jesus and he points out that they were only wanting to be fed again not actually seeking God’s word (John 6:25-26).
