The Need for a LIFE Coach

Problem in the Text: A Nation is in need of Revelation but they only have One Person they can get it from.

It is all on Moses for people to know the will of God in order to live their lives.

Exodus 18:15–16 ESV

15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God; 16 when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.”

The nature and character of God are necessary for the thriving of God’s people.

Exodus 18:12–18 ESV

12 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God; and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God. 13 The next day Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from morning till evening. 14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning till evening?” 15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God; 16 when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws.” 17 Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and the people with you will certainly wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you. You are not able to do it alone.

Moses is the only conduit for a revelation for most likely 3 million people and he is burnt out. It is so heavy a burden.

Our problem: We need guidance but there are too many sources saying different things.

Culture is defined by how a society develops and progresses its people as it figures out its shared values with each other and with God.

Culture wars are being fought about the environment.

Culture wars are being fought about gender and its purpose

Culture wars are being fought against whether racism is embedded into the fabric of our society. And if it is what do we do about it?

These culture wars exist because people don’t have shared values

People don’t have shared sacred values, because people don’t have the same sources for inspiration. Some people watch this news and other people watch the other channel. Their sources for inspiration is different and therefore what they believe to be sacred is different. Let me be plain. They’ve got a God and you’ve Got a God and their in conflict.

But for their to be peace their needs to be One Source, One Revelation of the true and Good, but just as important their needs to be access to the same source.

And fox news and cnn are not going to get it.

Let me be clear, just because you have general revelation of the nature of God and his statutes, you still need an understanding to how to apply it to a situation. Because each situation can be different.

For example:

Proverbs 26:4–5 ESV

4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself. 5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

I’ve got a dispute with a friend and I don’t know how to handle it. We need some perspective, we need direction.

Coming back to our text these people needed real guidance as to how to apply that revelation to their particular situation. But their is only one person they can get it from.

However, Moses Father in Law proposes a solution:

Exodus 18:19–22 ESV

19 Now obey my voice; I will give you advice, and God be with you! You shall represent the people before God and bring their cases to God, 20 and you shall warn them about the statutes and the laws, and make them know the way in which they must walk and what they must do. 21 Moreover, look for able men from all the people, men who fear God, who are trustworthy and hate a bribe, and place such men over the people as chiefs of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. 22 And let them judge the people at all times. Every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you.

He is going to divide them up in to small companies and give those people men who fear God and can’t be swayed by a bribe.

So that the burden is shared.

Our system of justice is divided up like this: trial courts, appeal courts, supreme courts.

(organizational principles when dealing with lots of people) This passage has a lot to say to those of us who think we can take on the world by ourselves and not get burnout.

—We can also learn that being burnout doesn’t mean God isn’t in the situation, it’s just that you need some wisdom and organization about the situation.

God is both artist and architect.....

But I think this text is showing us the more important point that it is necessary for God’s people to be able to taught the word of God the law of God. But the old testament method had some problems.

He is going to get into the law in a second which is God’s revelation of his story of salvation of the people of Israel and how he wants them to live in relationship with him in his land.

But there was a problem with that, because although there was going to be stone tablets and clear principles, the people needed a more intimate teacher, a more intimate guide.

Let’s go higher.

Moses can’t be in all places at one time, but there is a need for a life coach that can be in the lives of all the people at the same time. I’m going somewhere

Jeremiah 31:31–34 ESV

31 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. 33 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

The first covenant was given to the people and he sprinkled blood on them to say to death do us part. And they were not able to

But this new covenant — new agreement — is given to us through the shed blood of Jesus Christ. When we believe upon the message of the gospel, it is not based upon the blood of animals, but on the precious blood of the Son of God.

And through this new covenant — this new agreement, you’ve got a new teacher. It is Jesus, the Spirit of Jesus. He is God the Holy Spirit and he writes his law and how to operate on your heart. No longer do you have to search for Fox or CNN. You can take your bible, you can sit down in the presence of the Lord and he will give you direction.

It’s a new thing on the other side of calvary.

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

John 16:13 ESV

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
