Phi. 4:1-3                                   Live in Harmony in the Lord                                          12/8/96

(Series 22.31)                                                                                                                      ABCC

I.   Introduction and Review                                                                                    549

·        Paul has addressed the dangers of Judaism, Perfectionism & Worldliness in chapter 3 (dangerous teachers & teachings outside/within the church)

·        Paul has shown that the Christian’s highest goal is to have an increasing experiential relationship with Christ the Lord

·        He has encouraged us to have a mature attitude or mindset & live balanced Christian lives because heaven is our home & Christ is coming to take us home!

“Therefore” (v. 1) = because of the above

II.  The Precious Relationship of Believers (valued/treasured)

     A. We should have a loving, affectionate relationship in spite of our differences (v.1a)

·        “my beloved brethren whom I long to see, my joy and crown”; simply brethren (1:12; 3:1)

·        not my perfect brethren or even mature, but beloved even with all your flaws & immaturity

·        absence & difficult circumstances can stir greater love & affection for others

     B. Exhortation not to compromise in doctrine or lifestyle (v. 1b)

·        Because we love others, we encourage them not to compromise in their circumstances

     C. We should be concerned about every individual relationship (v. 2)

·        Faithful & godly Christians may have strong disagreements - firm convictions

·        Believers who have worked together in ministry for years may have strong disagreements

·        We should plead & beg believers to live in harmony in spite of their disagreements

·        We should avoid taking sides, but rather speak the truth in love & urge both to obey God

Live in Harmony in the Lord, pg. 2

     D. We should personally assist believers who cannot settle their disagreements (v. 3)

·        Two believers in conflict can affect an entire church (1Co. 12:18, 26-27)

·        Two believers in conflict can inhibit the progress of the gospel - no longer striving together!

·        Requires personal involvement, patience, gentleness (Pr. 15:1; 16:23-24)

III. Living in Harmony in the Lord

     A. Means “be of the same mind in the Lord” - in the essentials of the gospel!

·        Justification by faith in Christ alone, An increasing relationship with Christ is our goal, Heaven in our home (ch. 3) - every true believer can agree on these essentials & continue on working together in the gospel

     B. How can we live in harmony in the Lord?

Þ     Make sure you understand the essentials of the faith (review our doctrinal statement occasionally & look up the scripture references)

Þ     As much as possible, avoid controversial discussion with other brothers & sisters that you know cannot be resolved (Tit. 3:9; Rom. 12:18)

Þ     Consider other believers conscience & level of maturity in your relationship

Þ     If & when you find yourself in a strong disagreement with another believer, attempt to settle the matter quickly & without blaming another brother or sister.  If you cannot resolve the conflict solicit help from other members of the congregation.  If you see unresolved conflict, please get involved.  Remember the words of our Lord (Jn. 13:35; 17:20-23)

For the sake of the gospel, the glory of Christ & edifying of the church - it’s worth self-denial!
