Moses: A Murderer Redeemed.

Hebrews 11:23–29 ESV

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them. 29 By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned.

1. God’s Sovereign protection.

Pharoah decreed no Hebrew male children were to live. (Exodus 1:15-22)

It was in this environment that Moses is born.

Exodus 2:1-8

Mother put him in a basket made of bulrushes and added bitumen and pitch to the basket so it would float.

There in the Nile, he laid adrift found by Pharoah’s daughter.

The man who desired him dead, raises Moses in his home.

After learning from the Egyptian leaders, being educated in all their knowledge, Moses sees the burden’s of his people and strikes down an Egyptian. (Exodus 2;11-21)

Pharoah hears of Moses’ murder of the Egyptian and desired to kill him.

Moses flees Egypt at the age of 40 years old (Acts 7:23)

He meets his wife Zipporah.

2. The Call of God to service.

Keeping his father-in-law’s flock… to the west side of the wilderness .. at Horeb the mountain of God.

Witnesses the burning bush.

Turn aside to witness the miraculous site.

God’s voice calls out “Moses, Moses”

“Here I am!”

Exodus 3:5–6 ESV

5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

God gives Moses powerful signs.

The Plagues:

Water turned to blood.

They could not drink water from the Nile but Pharoah refused to let the Hebrews go.

Frogs

Pharoah agrees to let the people go worship God, but changes his mind when the plague eases.

Gnats

Flies

Egyptian Livestock Die, but Israel had no livestock even harmed.

Boils only harm the Egyptians

Hail destroys the craps, trees, man, and beast that were unprotected, only the area Israel resided were spared.

Locusts come and devour all that was left in the fields after the hail.

Darkness: It was so dark it could “be felt.”

It lasted three days

No one got up from their place

Couldn’t even see each other

Israel had light

Death of the First Born

Passover

Lamb blood over door posts protects Israel from harm. But all who did not have blood over their door posts first born were died.

God guides Israel with a pillar of cloud during the day and fire by night.

Pharoah comes rushing down upon Israel and God parts the red sea.

The sea was made a dry land.

Water was divided

God drowns the Egyptian army and Pharaoh.

God provides food for Israel, manna from heaven.

God gives Moses the Commandments

3. A Blessing Missed because of Disobedience.

Numbers 20:6–12 ESV

6 Then Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly to the entrance of the tent of meeting and fell on their faces. And the glory of the Lord appeared to them, 7 and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 8 “Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water. So you shall bring water out of the rock for them and give drink to the congregation and their cattle.” 9 And Moses took the staff from before the Lord, as he commanded him. 10 Then Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together before the rock, and he said to them, “Hear now, you rebels: shall we bring water for you out of this rock?” 11 And Moses lifted up his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their livestock. 12 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “Because you did not believe in me, to uphold me as holy in the eyes of the people of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them.”

4. A burial worthy of a faithful man.

Deuteronomy 34:4–7 ESV

4 And the Lord said to him, “This is the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, ‘I will give it to your offspring.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you shall not go over there.” 5 So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord, 6 and he buried him in the valley in the land of Moab opposite Beth-peor; but no one knows the place of his burial to this day. 7 Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated.
