Background-

“John”- Hebrew name

“Mark”- Geek name

Date: Between 60-70 A.D.

Details:

Shortest of the gospels

Earliest Written of the gospels

Unlike Matthew who opens his gospel with the genealogy of Jesus to proving His Abrahamic and Davidic lineage, or Luke who begins by reminding us of the events leading up to the birth of our Savior, or even John who goes back as far as eternity’s past to express the Divine nature of Jesus Christ.

Mark begins his gospel with what many believe could have served as the title of this gospel record… “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”

Body:

IT IS A PROCLAMATION!...

Mark Declares Four Significant Truths Concerning Jesus:

1. JESUS IS FULLY HUMAN.

Matthew 1:21 ESV
21 She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”

The name “Ἰησοῦς” is the Greek transliteration of the Hebrew name “Yehoshua/Yeshua”. It means “Yahweh is Salvation”.

Jesus is a human name and it reveals the reason Jesus came into this world. Jesus came into this world to save lost sinners.

Luke 19:10 ESV
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

The name “Jesus” declares His Person.

2. JESUS IS THE MESSIAH.

He is called “Christ”. The Anointed One. The One Who would fulfil Israels ecpectaions as their deliverer.

Matthew 16:16 ESV
16 Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

The title “Christ” declares His Position.

3. JESUS IS FULLY DIVINE.

Jesus is called “the Son of God”. When Mark refers to Jesus as the “Son of God” essentially he is reminding us that Jesus is no ordinary man. He is God in the flesh.

John 1:1 ESV
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 ESV
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

The name “Son of God” declares His Power.

4. JESUS IS THE SOURCE OF THE GOSPEL.

Mark 1:1 ESV
1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

“εὐαγγέλιον” The good news. God’s good news to humans.

Romans 1:16–17 ESV
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

The “Gospeldeclares His Purpose.
