The Helper

Me:

Have you ever used a “walker”?

a. It’s a humbling experience

i. You can see in the eyes of people they want to help but are afraid too.

ii. They don’t want to hurt you pride.

b. I’m very independent

i. Suck it and move ahead kind of guy

ii. But the day I returned home from my MRI on my back was tough moment

iii. My bathroom is 15 feet away I had to use a walker.

iv. I was at the end of rope

v. I had to have help with everything, and I mean everything

We:

Have you ever had to ask for help?

a. Pride keeps us from doing so.

i. Maybe when a church gives financial help

ii. Or you need a box of grocery

iii. It’s really very humbling

iv. Sometimes in life we find ourselves at the end of the rope

v. Who has been there?

b. Here’s the funny part

i. People love to help

ii. We do!!

iii. We receive a blessing from it.

c. Put yourself in the disciple’s shoes for a minute

i. Their world is being turned upside down

ii. Jesus says he is going away

iii. Where I am going you cannot go

iv. If I was them, I would be frightened too

v. Listen to Thomas

John 14:5 NLT

5 “No, we don’t know, Lord,” Thomas said. “We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?”

vi. You would be frightened too

God:

a. Because if I don’t…

i. Salvation will not be possible

John 16:7 ESV

7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.

vi. Meaning:

(a title for the Holy Spirit) one who helps, by consoling, encouraging, or mediating on behalf of—‘Helper, Encourager, Mediator.

d. Back in the shoes of the disciples

ii. Read this carefully

John 16:13 ESV

13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.

iv. Verse 12 I have more to say but you cannot bear it. But the Spirit of truth will guide you.

v. In your darkest days My spirit will be there to HELP you.

vi. He will be there to plead your case for you.

vii. You will have the truth and the power of the Holy Spirit

You:

When you hit your lowest point

a. You have an advocate a helper a counselor

i. When you are alone

ii. When you are scared because of bad news

iii. When you are in the depth of grief

iv. When your marriage is on the rocks

v. When you got a bill you cannot possibly pay. Debt

vi. When you have become so depressed

vii. When you are in the grip of addiction

viii. When you’ve been betray

ix. When you look into someone eyes and see pity

b. You my friend have an Advocate pleading your case

i. You are not alone

ii. You don’t have to face your Goliath alone

iii. David didn’t and you don’t

We:

Lay it on the alter

a. The alter of heaven

Hebrews 4:15–16 NIV

15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
