Outline
II. THE DUTIES TO GOD AND SATAN (6-9)
B. Duties Regarding Satan (8-9)
Be sober and vigilant of your adversary
Resist your adversary
1 Peter 5:8–9 ESV
8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.
9) Who is their adversary? What is he doing? (8)
- The devil; walking about like a lion, seeking whom he may devour
10) What should they do in regards to their adversary? (8-9)
- Be sober, be vigilant - Resist him, steadfast in the faith
How does one resist the adversary?
Tony Padgett
First - We must stay mindful that the enemy is always present. "So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand." (Rom 7:21)Second - We must know how the enemy operates and the methods he uses - "so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs." (2 Cor 2:11)Third – The only true way to know how the enemy operates is to know the scriptures – “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” (2 Tim 2:15)Fourth – Have a consistent prayer lift – “Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thes. 5:17)
Stephanie Sherrod
2 Cor 6:14-18
Be separate and do not fellowship with lawlessness.
Be sober and vigilant.
James 4 1:8
Submit to God and draw near to him. Do not be friends with the world. Resist the devil and he will flee.
Walter Wiegand
Our adversary, the devil, hunts the sick, young, vulnerable and those falling behind the flock who are alone and not alert. Peter warns us to be watchful when encountering suffering. So how do we resist? We remain ready; confident that the Spirit is in us; focusing our thoughts on God for strength; digesting his word; expressing our fears, needs and concerns in actual words of prayer thereby turning them over to God; and, by calling upon on our fellow sojourners for encouragement and support (Christianity is a group concept). Keep our eyes on Christ, which is another was of saying submit to his leadership, resist....and he (devil) will flee from you (Jam 4.7).
Objective
4) To glean how Peter sought to encourage his brethren in their suffering
Summary
The epistle draws to a close, first with a prayer that God will eventually perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle them. Mention is made of Silvanus, and Peter’s purpose in writing. Greetings are sent by “she who is in Babylon” and “Mark, my son”. Finally, a command to greet one another with a kiss of love is given, along with a prayer for peace to all who are in Christ Jesus (10-14).
Outline
III.CONCLUDING REMARKS (10-14)
A. Closing Prayer (10-11)
B. Closing Greetings (12-14)
1 Peter 5:9–14 ESV
9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen. 12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. 13 She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

In knowing God’s Word we know how to respond to worldly situations. We understand how to remain humble while suffering for Gods will. We have learned that God has promised us a life of eternity with Him if we obey
Walter Wiegand
I am reminded that trials/sufferings come so that my faith may be proved genuine and that a genuine faith will result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. An authenticated faith must be consistently demonstrated in the way we behave toward one another and to the outside world. Our hope is entirely in the God of grace who called us to his eternal glory in Christ.
Wayne Zokal
This book provides us with an eternal perspective of our life on earth. This book provides us guidance to help those who our experiencing intense opposition in an ungodly environment and that we as believers should not provoke any hostility or rebellion to authority unnecessarily .We are to follow the example in suffering innocently and honorably for what is right and true.

How to live obediently in a world that largely does not follow the principles of God.
How to conduct myself as a Christian woman and wife and how to submit to Biblically guided authority.
Tony Padgett
The word of God must always take precedent over our "feelings". God has given us clear and concise instructions on who we are and how we present ourselves to those around us.
