A Beautiful Thing

As the Easter weekend approaches, we will today consider one of the many passages in the gospels from the week leading up to Jesus’ death, with what was possibly the only ray of sunshine Jesus experienced that week: having His body anointed with perfume by Mary. While his disciples rebuked her for her action, Jesus commended it & called it “a beautiful thing” that she did. Mary, unlike the disciples, had heeded Jesus’ words about his coming death and resurrection. Believing this, she anointed his body in advance, recognising the eternal significance of what he was about to do. We can’t anoint his body today, but consider also what it is Mary really did, and what we can likewise do for Jesus, our Lord.
