Transcript
The passage starts by Jesus reminding the disciples of the temporary nature of something they see as permanent (v. 1-2)
The disciples respond by assuming that the temple and Jesus’ return are the same event. How will they know when it is happening (v. 3)
He starts out by describing when the time when the temple will be destroyed. It is going to be rough. But at this time, people will falsely report that the Messiah is returning. Jesus says, “don’t believe them!” (v. 23). All of this stuff happened before AD 70 (so v. 34 is true), but the events will continue to happen (we are in this period!). The conclusion of this period is Jesus’ return (v. 30)
Does v. 31 teach the rapture?
Does v. 31 teach the rapture?
No, it doesn’t. If you are just starting with this passage you will think Jesus is having the angels gather those who are already in heaven. That seems to be what is going on here.
Lesson from the fig tree? Wasn’t that five-ever ago? 21:12-26:5 is all one day!
Christ has two natures, the natures are not comprimised. His human nature
God does not grow weary…but Jesus slept
God does not need anything…yet Jesus was hungry
This actually shows the commitment to correct accounts by scripture because these words could have easily been deleted!
Do v. 40-41 talk about the rapture? Maybe. But which group is taken? Nothing in v. 40-41 tells us…but v. 39 gives us a clue. In Jesus’ reference to the ark, the wicked are taken for judgment. It seems reasonable to conclude that the same applies in v. 40-41
Friends: keep watch (v. 42) You must be ready (v. 44)
What is the difference between longing for Jesus’ return and deading it? Our faithfulness and wisdom! (v. 45-50)
