Text: Luke 22:15-24
INTRODUCTION: What an hour! The shadow of this hour had dogged the footsteps of Christ from the beginning of His ministry. Now “the hour was come.” This is the decisive hour; the hour that artists have endeavored to capture on canvas, and poets have attempted to reveal with the pen. But neither canvas nor pen are sufficient to extol the magnitude of this hour.
LET US TAKE A QUICK LOOK AT THOSE PRESENT AT THE FIRST LORD’S SUPPER:

1. James and John at one time displayed vindictiveness, Luke 9:54 tells us: When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, “Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up?”

A LITTLE OBNOXIOUS WOULDN’T YOU ALL SAY?

2. Peter often spoke before he thought, SOUND FAMILIAR? Mark 9:6 “He said this because he didn’t really know what else to say, for they were all terrified.”

3. Thomas once took a DO OR DIE attitude, John 11:16 “Thomas, nicknamed the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too—and die with Jesus.”

4. Judas had a pious mouth (HE COULD GET A LITTLE LIPPY) but HE HAD little soul,

John 12:4–6 (NLT) “4 But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, 5 “That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” 6 Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself. 5. It was not unusual for these “twelve” to engage in an argument, Luke 22:24.”

CAN YOU BELIEVE THE GROUP THAT Jesus ordained the Lord’s Supper with? THEY SOUND A LITTLE LIKE YOU AND ME!

OK…SO WHY DID JESUS WANT THIS GROUP OF GUYS?

LET’S FIND OUT WHY JESUS CONTINUED FELLOWSHIP WITH THIS GROUP.

1. Their eyes and ears were trained on Christ, DID YOU ALL HEAR THAT? Matthew 13:16 16 “But blessed are your eyes, because they see; and your ears, because they hear.” THIS GROUP HAS BEEN WITH JESUS! EAT, SLEEP, WALK, TALK, THEY HAVE BEEN IN JESUS’S LIFE. THEY LOVED JESUS!

2. They acknowledged their LACK of strength AND THEIR NEED OF JESUS’S STRENGTH. WE READ IN Matthew 17:19 “19 Afterward the disciples asked Jesus privately, “Why couldn’t we cast out that demon?”

3. They had their hearts set on fellowship with Jesus: “Lord, why cannot I follow thee now?” John 13:37 37 “But why can’t I come now, Lord?” he asked. “I’m ready to die for you.” CAN YOU HEAR THE LOVE AND COMMITMENT?

NOTICE THAT THE DISCIPLES WERE “WITH HIM.” I AM GETTING HERE THAT THEY ARE A GROUP, A TEAM, A UNIT...............

1. “He ordained … that they … be with him,” Mark 3:14 “14 Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach,”

2. “Come unto me,” not “I’m coming with you,” Matthew 11:28 “28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” JESUS IS CALLING THEM. THEY NEEDED TO DECIDE IF THEY WANTED TO FOLLOW JESUS.

3. Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, not vice versa, TO HEAR, TO LEARN, TO LOVE...... Luke 10:39–40 “39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. 40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” HOW OFTEN DO WE GET CAUGHT UP IN PETTY ISSUES.......

4. SO THE GUARDS ARE TAKING JESUS AWAY......Jesus asked the disciples, John 6:65–68 “65 Then he said, “That is why I said that people can’t come to me unless the Father gives them to me.” 66 At this point many of his disciples turned away and deserted him. 67 Then Jesus turned to the Twelve and asked, “Are you also going to leave?” 68 Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go? You have the words that give eternal life.

DOES JESUS EVER ASK YOU “WELL, ARE YOU GOING TO LEAVE ME TOO?”

5. “Lovest thou me?”—are you still with me JESUS ASK’S? EVER REMEMBER A FRIEND ASKING YOU, “WELL, ARE YOU STILL WITH ME? John 21:15 “15 After breakfast Jesus asked Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” “Yes, Lord,” Peter replied, “you know I love you.” “Then feed my lambs,” Jesus told him."

The church must be “with Christ” before Christ can be with the church. “He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth” (Luke 11:23). May this communion hour be one of heart-searching.
