Introduction:

My Aunt Joan taught me how to drive.
she taught me how to drive I first learned on a manual transmission (Stick Shift)
She taught me the components of the car. (Ignition, gas, brake, clutch…)
She taught me everything that was vital to making the car go.
But she taught the vital component called the clutch. The clutch was key to making it go.
Many Christians don’t understand who and what they are.
Many don’t understand how they can live with power!
Ephesians 5:15–18 CSB
Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk—not as unwise people but as wise—making the most of the time, because the days are evil. So don’t be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. And don’t get drunk with wine, which leads to reckless living, but be filled by the Spirit:
Paul warns the believers again on how to live.
Apply your head knowledge about God to your life.

Ephesians 5:15-16

God is telling us to walk (live) accurately. (Walk not to stumble)
Paul is connecting v 1-14 (Sexual immorality, greed, obscene talk, crude jokes)
The things in the previous verse were related to idolaters.
Paul is now telling the Christian that there is CONSISTENCY in the Christian life.
This consistency helps you and others.
“Not as unwise...” Means to take ignore your experience and the results of your negative experiences.
“Making the most of the time (Kairos= season)
Make the most of your time for we all expire.

I. Find your way in the light

A. Be careful how you live (v. 15).
The way in which we live impacts others. (Driving away Darkness)
B. Be wise and make the most of every opportunity (v. 16).
C. The days are evil (v. 16).
Be vigilant (Only so much time)
Christianity hasn’t failed, it just hasn’t been tried.
D. Understand what the Lord’s will is (v. 17).
Paul defines wisdom as “Understanding what the will of the Lord is”
E. Do not get drunk.
1. People get drunk to relieve tension, to bury guilt, to feel more at ease socially, to gain a greater sense of strength and security, and to experience a warmth and glow that is not normally theirs.
2. These are precisely the results of being filled with the Holy Spirit.
Have you given the HS access to every area of your life?
Complete commitment
Complete control
3. Therefore he says: “Do not be drunk … but be filled with the Spirit” (v. 18).

Who is the Holy Spirit?

A Penetrating Person (Spirits penetrate material, personality, minds)

What is the Holy Spirit?

Holy Spirit is a Being
He IS NOT enthusiasm!
He IS NOT intellect!
He IS a Person! (He has will, intelligence, feeling, knowledge, sympathy, love, can see, think, hear, speak, and desire.)
This in to NEW but it is TRUE
I say this so that you might be tempted to partake.
You might have right theology but if you aren’t living your theology you are empty, joyless, without peace, and weak.
There waas a song at my grandmothers church “Certainly Lord” and it asked “Do you have good religion, Like the Bible Says, Certainly Lord ! do you love everybody yea Like the Bible says Certainly Lord I want to know is your name on the roll yea Like the Bible says certainly Lord Each sign shall follow Them that believe And if you trust in the Lord You shall receive

Who is the Holy Spirit?

The Spirit is God!
Psalm 139:7 CSB
Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?
The attribute of Omnipresence is only of God.
Hebrews 9:14 CSB
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God?
Eternality is an attribute of God.
We have to not only believe this about the Spirit but we have to experience The Spirit.

What is He Like?

He is an unseen diety
He can’t be separated from the Father and the Son
The Spirit has the same essence as the Father and Son
You can know what the Spirit is if you know who Jesus is. (Love, kind, gentle, sweet)

The Spirit was the promise of the Father

Joel 2:28–29 CSB
After this I will pour out my Spirit on all humanity; then your sons and your daughters will prophesy, your old men will have dreams, and your young men will see visions. I will even pour out my Spirit on the male and female slaves in those days.
How do you get drunk? You drink!
How do you stay drunk? You keep drinking!
Your life is evidence of an invisible but powerful God!
Receiving Jesus’ advertised gift is the difference between failure and success in your life.
This is part of the plan for God’s people “Be filled with the spirit” is a COMMAND.
This life only belongs to believers.
F. Help one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (v. 19).
G. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord (v. 19).
H. Always give thanks to God for everything (v. 20).
I. Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ (v. 21).
My Aunt taught me about the Brake first.
If you are not interested in the Brake, you should not want to make it go!

How to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit

Do you desire a Spirit-filled life?
You have to answer that question.
Do you want to be possessed by a spirit other than your own?
Do you want to be controlled by God? (expected obedience to His Word.)
Will you give him every area of your life?
Will you give Him your personality?
Are you ready to live in opposition to the world?
The world couldn’t stand Jesus.

How to receive Him

Present your Body to him (Romans 12:1-12)
God can’t fill what he can’t have.
Ask to be filled with His Spirit (Luke 11:9-13)
Obey God! God gives His Spirit to those who obey Him (Acts 5:32)
Have Faith: The Spirit is a gift to those who believe. (Galatians 3:2)
The Spirit will come take over your BODY, MIND, LIFE, PERSONALITY, DIRECTLY AND BLUNTLY, so that your Body will be the Temple of God through the Spirit.

Cultivate the Spirit’s Companionship

Amos 3:3 CSB
Can two walk together without agreeing to meet?
For two to walk together they must be one.
They agree to walk together
There is an advantage to walk together
You can’t face both ways at once (a little Christian and a little worldly)
advance in your maturity in Christ
You cant want Christianity for just the insurance value.
You can’t want insurance and not pay for it!
Your religion can not be SOCIAL but SPIRITUAL
