Salt & Light

Jesus started off the sermon on the mount with what we call the beatitudes.

Were to be an encouragement.

5:13

Salt was used for different things in Jesus day.

As a preservative

Important element of one’s diet

and as a fertilizer

In Biblical days it was said that salt was one of the basic necessities of life,

It was also said “There is nothing more useful than salt and sunshine.

Jesus is telling His disciples that they are important for the people.

They have the gospel message that will preserve peoples eternal life.

They will give people the spiritual food they need.

And they will help people grow spiritually.

the disciples are the people who have the spiritual knowledge, wisdom, and way of life by which to preserve this world in a proper condition

Application

It is the same for us, we are also the salt of the earth.

How can we be salt to the earth (all people)?

Speak scripture to those who are going through a hard time.

Those who are not believers.

Show people how to do a devotional/Bible study

Speak Jesus into peoples lives who do not know Him.

Salt does not lose its taste or saltiness.

So what does Jesus mean by saying this?

There are different thoughts with commentaries.

But what Jesus is saying to His disciples is to not lose or be diluted in being salt to the earth.
