when was the last time that your imagination was kindled at the thought of delighting in the teachings of God? Did you know that his teachings are delightful? Did you know that they are good, and refreshing to the heart? Did you know that they are worth obsessing over?
Psalm 1 is what we call a wisdom Psalm. Its a song from the wise, to teach us what is true. It was purposefully placed at the beginning of the book to set our perspective for understanding the whole book. The book of Psalms is not just a collection of old poetry, it is the worship of God’s people which can teach us how we should relate to him.
Oh, blessed is the man, or woman, who chooses to walk in God’s ways. Who chooses not to follow the example of the evil people around him, but instead chooses to commit to God’s ways. This person chooses to delight in God’s teachings. Have you ever delighted in God’s teaching? Delighting in someone or something doesn’t always come naturally. There’s a honeymoon for every new thing, and then the hard work of romancing begins. If you want to find delight in the scriptures, they are there for the having. Just like anything, it takes commitment to the learning curve. Much like the blessed one in this psalm, who commits himself to constantly diving into God’s word. On His law, he meditates day and night. This is certainly poetry. We have other responcibilities that must be looked after. But my guess, is that no one here is in serious danger of neglecting our bills and work because we spend too much time in the Bible. That would be too easy a problem to fix.
You don’t have to be a wiz at reading to be able to delight in the scriptures. Just take a passages of scripture and meditate on it. Look at it throughout the week. Stop, and think about it. Ruminate and chew on it throughout the week.
Those who delight in God’s laws are like trees planted by streams of water. The imagery here is one that is very familiar. It is a picture of the presense of God. We see it in the very beginning in the garden of Eden, in God’s design of the temple, here in the psalms, and in Revelation in the new Jerusalem.
