Science
We have been talking about being made in the image of God and that we are called to be His stewards.
Remember I talked about Adam and one of his first jobs was to name the animals, a job that required study and observation.
What do you think of when I say the word science?
Can christianity and science co exist?
“Understanding the natural world is a vital part of our mandate to govern it as God’s stewards, of course, and not surprisingly, there are other examples of observation of nature in Scripture.”
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
God clearly uses science and creation to reveal himself to everyone, so it must be good.
So what do we believe about science?
There are two kinds of science: observational and historical. Observational is things you see and observe and you use the scientific process to prove or disprove things. If I drop a bowling ball of the roof onto concrete which will break…if I heat this piece of metal up, at what temperature does it lose its shape.
Historical science has to do with the past, where we came from and how things came to be. This is rooted in your worldview.
“It is very common today for people to treat science and religion as if they were two completely separate, unconnected spheres.
“As for operations science, creationists are staunch supporters of it. Furthermore, we believe that the basic principles required for operations science are specifically biblical (that is, operations science requires belief in a understandable universe, in the ability to discover truth, and in the consistent workings of nature).” (Answers in Genesis)
Science proves and defends the bible, creation, the creator and so much more. God made himself known to us through creation.
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
God is the creator and sustainer of the universe.
“Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men, of like nature with you, and we bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them. In past generations he allowed all the nations to walk in their own ways. Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.”
For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them
God is revealed and proven by nature. You look at the plants and the animals and know that there is a creator of those things. It was not by chance or accident that those things came to be the way that they are. God created them.
“For a Christian, the critical assumptions that enable us to do science are simple. God is rational, and so the world He created is rational. Human beings are made in God’s image and thus we are also rational. as a result, even if we cannot understand everything God did exhaustively, we can to some extent “think God’s thoughts after Him” and discover the rational processes (“laws”) that govern the physical universe.”
I was doing some study this week and came across a video by John MacArthur. He was answering the question—is science in the bible? There is a common belief that there are 5 knowable categories of science—time, force, motion, space and matter. It takes one verse in scripture to find all five of these.
In the beginning (time)
God (force)
created (motion)
the heavens (space)
and the earth (matter)
Science is all throughout the bible and it proves the bible to be true. History and science time and time again prove the stories of scripture to be true.
What was Jesus most common way of teaching? (parables) And what were most of the parables about? (farming/plants/growing)
Jesus himself used science to illustrate salvation. The parable of the sower, the wicked tenants, etc.
