We probably know more about American slavery, so let’s start with what we know about that before comparing it to ancient Roman slavery:

chosen for their race

kidnapped from homes and sold as property

no rights

not fully human

Roman slavery was a little bit different. In Rome, slaves could:

own property

earn money

buy their freedom

Slaves in ancient Rome usually were slaves due to their debt, or due to their nationality if they were conquered

Slaves in ancient Rome were seen as a lower social class, but still human
