As we receive our offering tonight I want to help us understand the difference between a tithe and an offering. A tithe is ten percent of your increase given to God for the ability to build and maintain the body of Christ meeting place, wages for the priests, and supply for the furthering of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The tithe was first introduced in scripture when Abram gave ten percent of all the spoils of war to Melchizedek. And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” An he gave him a tithe of all. - Gen 14:20 and 1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated "king of righteousness," and then also king of Salem, meaning "king of peace," 3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually. 4 Now consider how great this man [was], to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils. - Heb 7:1-4 NKJV

Later, the tithe was implemented in the law so that the priests would be provided for and the temple would be maintained. The tithe is an ancient practice that was done before we understand it as a levitical practice.

Tithing is a commitment and discipline. Giving to God through the local storehouse or church is one of the best ways to build our faith in God for His provision.

8 "Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, 'In what way have we robbed You?' In tithes and offerings. 9 You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, [Even] this whole nation. 10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this," Says the LORD of hosts, "If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you [such] blessing That [there will] not [be room] enough [to receive it]. 11 "And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes, So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground, Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field," Says the LORD of hosts; 12 "And all nations will call you blessed, For you will be a delightful land," Says the LORD of hosts. - Mal 3:8-12 NKJV

Offerings are given as something above and beyond the tithe and for various reasons. We should tithe on all our increase if we truly desire to see God’s hand on our finances and belongings. He set in place a spiritual law of reaping and sowing, we bring in more than we give out. This law works on everything. When we receive extra income outside of our work we should be so committed to the practice of sowing that we will give off the top the ten percent alloted to God. If you are afraid of not having enough that you withhold from giving then you are not implementing the biblical and spiritual principles of God’s word.

Some people have matured in this area so much that they love to give and find a fulfillment in it as they have a heart attitude of gratitude. We give out of that kind of heart. Jesus addressed the Pharisees heart when He said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. - Mat 23:23

When the early church first started, giving generously was done without question. People wanted to drive the gospel forward, they wanted to provide for each other, and they had a heart of unity. Today, it takes finances to keep things moving forward for the gospel. We need buildings, media, and many other things to advance the gospel in this day and age.

40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added [to them]. 42 And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers. 43 Then fear came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles. 44 Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, 45 and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need. 46 So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. - Act 2:40-47 NKJV

Jesus rebuked an unfaithful steward and told him, Therefore if you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? 13No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” - Lk 16:11-13

Tonight, I want to ask you to check in with God and see if you have a heart that is right with Him when it comes to trusting Him to provide for all your needs. If you are withholding from God the tithe or anything else then take a moment to ask Him for help in the areas you are weak in and ask Him to help you break free from a spirit of mammon and poverty.
