I. Option 1: He’s a Madman vs. 20-21
A. Jesus’ family came to see Him, and take custody or to arrest Him. Why? At this point they did not believe Jesus was the Messiah, and thought He was crazy.
For not even His brothers were believing in Him.
B. They sought to take Him home, and keep Him under wraps. Because: 1) they thought He was crazy! 2) They thought that His lifestyle was unhealthy. Meals were seldom interrupted that and Jesus was in constant danger of being trampled. 3) Jesus was at odds with the religious crowd. If you’re sold out for Jesus you will be at odds with the religious, but lost crowds. 4) The lost look at the completely sold out as completely bonkers!
C. Many today believe that Jesus was a good man, and love some of His teachings, but don’t believe that Jesus is the Son of God. They will say that He had delusions of grandeur.
II. Option 2: He’s Demon Possessed vs. 22-30
II. Option 2: He’s Demon Possessed vs. 22-30
A. The scribes were the religious experts. They had come to see if what Jesus was doing was biblical or not. Matthew’s account says He had just exorcised a demon prior to this. So the scribes are saying that Jesus is casting out demons by the chief of demons, Beelzebub.
Then a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute was brought to Jesus, and He healed him, so that the mute man spoke and saw.
All the crowds were amazed, and were saying, “This man cannot be the Son of David, can he?”
But when the Pharisees heard this, they said, “This man casts out demons only by Beelzebul the ruler of the demons.”
B. Jesus uses three examples: First, a kingdom divided can not stand (Civil wars/ British Empire ex).
C. A house divided can not stand. (Divorce ex).
D. A thief, would have to bind a strong man to rob him. Satan, is not going to fight himself. Jesus, being far stronger than Satan, was binding him, and setting the captives free.
E. Jesus says that they are in danger of committing the unpardonable sin. The unpardonable sin is only committed by a person who is lost, and has hardened their heart to the point that, they knowing call what God has done, or is doing an act of Satan. It is committed by those who have hardened their hearts to the point, that hell, or anything of that nature no longer bothers them. The reason it is unpardonable is that they’ve been enlightened only to refuse the Holy Spirit continually.
F. If someone is bothered thinking that they have committed that sin, then no they have not committed it, because it means they are given over to a reprobate and unbothered mind.
III. Option 3: He’s God
III. Option 3: He’s God
A. You can either think Jesus is crazy or demon possessed. The only other option is that Jesus is who He claimed to be… God Himself!
B. If Jesus is who He claimed to be then He calls us to live a life completely sold out to Him. Anything short of radical obedience is a lame excuse.
C. You can not, NOT make a choice, you must choose one, or the other, you can not have a mixed view.
“Now, therefore, fear the Lord and serve Him in sincerity and truth; and put away the gods which your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.
“If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”
