II.
Philippians 1:19-26
!! A.     Passage
!!! 1.      19:  For I know that through your prayers and the help given by the Spirit of Jesus Christ, what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance.
Paul is in prison, and he believes that the prayers of the Philippians and the Holy Spirit will help me so that he will be delivered.
!!! 2.      20:  I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
It would be easy for Paul to feel ashamed or embarrassed because he is in prison.
Continuing to talk about Jesus would bring even more shame on him.
Paul hopes that he will have courage to continue to talk about Jesus.
His main concern is that Jesus be glorified, not himself.
!!! 3.      21 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
As Paul lives, he is completely committed to Christ.
When Paul dies, he will gain so much because he will be with Jesus.
!!! 4.      22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me.
Yet what shall I choose?
I do not know!
As long as Paul is alive, he will produce fruit for Jesus, but he doesn’t know if he wants to do that!
!!! 5.      23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
Paul thinks that it would be better to die and be with Jesus.
!!! 6.      24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
Paul thinks that one of the reasons that he is not with Jesus yet is because God has some plan for him with the Philippians.
!!! 7.      25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
God’s plan for Paul is that he will be able to help them progress in faith and have more joy.
!!! 8.      26 so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.
With Paul’s help, the joy that the Philippians have will overflow.
!! B.      Summary
!!! 1.      Paul is able to have joy even though he is in prison because he is convinced that the prayers of the Philippians and the Holy Spirit will help him to be delivered.
!!! 2.      While he stays in prison, he hopes that he will not lose the courage to talk about Jesus to other people.
!!! 3.      While Paul is alive, he lives his life for Christ.
!!! 4.      When Paul dies, it will be to his advantage because he will be with Christ.
!!! 5.
He knows that he will continue to live because he is convinced that God has a plan for him to help the Philippians progress in their faith and have more joy.
