Foundation II Kings 17

2 Kings 17:7 For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods,

2 Kings 17:8 And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.

2 Kings 17:9 And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city.

2 Kings 17:10 And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree:

2 Kings 17:11 And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger:

2 Kings 17:12 For they served idols, whereof the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing.

2 Kings 17:13 Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets.

2 Kings 17:14 Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God.

2 Kings 17:15 And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them.

2 Kings 17:16 And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served Baal.

2 Kings 17:17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

2 Kings 17:18 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.

2 Kings 17:19 Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.

2 Kings 17:20 And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.

2 Kings 17:21 For he rent Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the LORD, and made them sin a great sin.

2 Kings 15:8-

8 In the thirty and eighth year of Azariah king of Judah did Zachariah the son of Jeroboam reign over Israel in Samaria six months. 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as his fathers had done: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. 10 And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and smote him before the people, and slew him, and reigned in his stead. 11 And the rest of the acts of Zachariah, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. 12 This was the word of the LORD which he spake unto Jehu, saying, Thy sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth generation. And so it came to pass. 13 Shallum the son of Jabesh began to reign in the nine and thirtieth year of Uzziah king of Judah; and he reigned a full month in Samaria. 14 For Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah, and came to Samaria, and smote Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria, and slew him, and reigned in his stead. 15 And the rest of the acts of Shallum, and his conspiracy which he made, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. 16 Then Menahem smote Tiphsah, and all that were therein, and the coasts thereof from Tirzah: because they opened not to him, therefore he smote it; and all the women therein that were with child he ripped up. 17 In the nine and thirtieth year of Azariah king of Judah began Menahem the son of Gadi to reign over Israel, and reigned ten years in Samaria. 18 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not all his days from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. 19 And Pul the king of Assyria came against the land: and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver, that his hand might be with him to confirm the kingdom in his hand. 20 And Menahem exacted the money of Israel, even of all the mighty men of wealth, of each man fifty shekels of silver, to give to the king of Assyria. So the king of Assyria turned back, and stayed not there in the land. 21 And the rest of the acts of Menahem, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? 22 And Menahem slept with his fathers; and Pekahiah his son reigned in his stead. 23 In the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah Pekahiah the son of Menahem began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned two years. 24 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. 25 But Pekah the son of Remaliah, a captain of his, conspired against him, and smote him in Samaria, in the palace of the king's house, with Argob and Arieh, and with him fifty men of the Gileadites: and he killed him, and reigned in his room. 26 And the rest of the acts of Pekahiah, and all that he did, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. 27 In the two and fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah Pekah the son of Remaliah began to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned twenty years. 28 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. 29 In the days of Pekah king of Israel came Tiglathpileser king of Assyria, and took Ijon, and Abelbethmaachah, and Janoah, and Kedesh, and Hazor, and Gilead, and Galilee, all the land of Naphtali, and carried them captive to Assyria. 30 And Hoshea the son of Elah made a conspiracy against Pekah the son of Remaliah, and smote him, and slew him, and reigned in his stead, in the twentieth year of Jotham the son of Uzziah. 31 And the rest of the acts of Pekah, and all that he did, behold, they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.

i. Any dependence other than Christ will fail

b. A spiritually dead person Does not live in the land of promise (Victory/Blessing)

2 King 17

1 In the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah began Hoshea the son of Elah to reign in Samaria over Israel nine years. 2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, but not as the kings of Israel that were before him. 3 Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents. 4 And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea: for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt, and brought no present to the king of Assyria, as he had done year by year: therefore the king of Assyria shut him up, and bound him in prison. 5 Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes.

**Israel had no righteous kings**

i. When Israel is not living in the land of promise they are not being bless (everywhere else is a land of burden)

2 King 17

24 And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon, and from Cuthah, and from Ava, and from Hamath, and from Sepharvaim, and placed them in the cities of Samaria instead of the children of Israel: and they possessed Samaria, and dwelt in the cities thereof. 25 And so it was at the beginning of their dwelling there, that they feared not the LORD: therefore the LORD sent lions among them, which slew some of them. 26 Wherefore they spake to the king of Assyria, saying, The nations which thou hast removed, and placed in the cities of Samaria, know not the manner of the God of the land: therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land. 27 Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land. 28 Then one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Bethel, and taught them how they should fear the LORD. 29 Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt. 30 And the men of Babylon made Succothbenoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, 31 And the Avites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their children in fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. 32 So they feared the LORD, and made unto themselves of the lowest of them priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. 33 They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations whom they carried away from thence. 34 Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel; 35 With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them, saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them: 36 But the LORD, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt with great power and a stretched out arm, him shall ye fear, and him shall ye worship, and to him shall ye do sacrifice. 37 And the statutes, and the ordinances, and the law, and the commandment, which he wrote for you, ye shall observe to do for evermore; and ye shall not fear other gods. 38 And the covenant that I have made with you ye shall not forget; neither shall ye fear other gods. 39 But the LORD your God ye shall fear; and he shall deliver you out of the hand of all your enemies. 40 Howbeit they did not hearken, but they did after their former manner. 41 So these nations feared the LORD, and served their graven images, both their children, and their children's children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.

Luke 4:17

17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,(Isaiah 61) 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

How do Isaiah’s visions about the future relate to today?

Is there any hope for utopia living now?

- Yes, there is hope for an individual Utopia

- No, there is no hope for a world Utopia

Visions of Utopia (let them translate into a reality of our Christian walk)

Abundant life - 1John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

Characteristics of Christian utopia living

1. Christian Utopian lifts Christ up in that life

a. When Christ is lifted up in a believers life all can see Him (Christ) Col 1:18

2. Christian Utopian Draws People to Jesus by that Life

3. Christian Utopian is a life of Complete peace

a. Man cannot and will not bring peace

b. Perfect piece will come when Christ returns

c. Peace is a result of righteousness

d. Christians always have positional peace but not always practical peace ( we loose practical peace with sin)

4. Christian Utopian Is a life without sin

a. Worldly Practices (Vs. 6)

b. Materialism (Vs. 7)

i. American Dream – you should do better than your parents

c. Idolatry (Vs. 9)

d. Total disregard for authority (Ch. 3:12)

e. Women - Focused on outward appearance (Ch. 3:16)

f. Men – Lack a fear of the Lord (Ch. 2:10)

i. Prophetic of Babylonian captivity

ii. Prophetic of Tribulation to come

Why was it necessary for Isaiah to See the Lord?

What happened when Isaiah got a glimpse of God?

How did this change his life?

What kind of ministry could he expect?

What promise could God make this prophet?

Isa 6:1

¶ In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.

King Uzziah

National hero

Rebuilt the walls

Rebuilt the economy

Sought the Lord

Brought back temple worship

Isaiah could have had many fears after Uzziah died. He had been a wonderful king. God showed Isaiah that even though the earthly throne was shaky God’s throne is forever.

What happens when you eyes see the king?

1. You will be awe struck by his majesty

a. Holy, Holy, Holy – God is removed far above us – He transcends us

b. God’s love is Holy Love, God’s mercy is Holy Mercy

c. God’s Glory – A manifestation of his presence**

2. You Will be Broken over you sin

a. Woe is me – great lamentation

b. I am undone – doomed to die

3. You will be yielded to his commission

John 12

37 But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him: 38 That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39 Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again, 40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them. 41 These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.

1 And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz [135 years after Ahab] the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it. 2 And it was told the house of David [Judah], saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim [Israel - Ephraim the largest tribe]. And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the wood are moved with the wind. [Ahaz is scared to death – he does not have his trust in God and he leans to his own understanding and abilities] 3 Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field; 4 And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah. 5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying, 6 Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal: 7 Thus saith the Lord GOD, It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass. 8 For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people. 9 And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah's son. If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established.

[Payday would come 1. in his time he would be defected (he died early as well) 2. in the generations to come the Israelites would be defeated]

II Chronicles 28 – the people would not burry him with the kings

17 The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father's house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria. [Because of Ahaz’s wickedness Israel would experience troubling times]

18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.

**Egyptians – Fly’s**

**Assyrians – Bees**

(In ancient times Bee keepers would hiss or pipe to have the bugs follow. The picture here is that God will lead the Assyrians and Egyptians into Israel to bring them trouble. )

19 And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes. 20 In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard. [Nebuchadnezzar did this when he destroyed Jerusalem]

23 And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns. 24 With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns. 25 And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.

2 Chronicles 28

1 Ahaz was twenty years old when he began to reign, and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem: but he did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD, like David his father: 2 For he walked in the ways of the kings of Israel [all 19 of them were wicked], and made also molten images for Baalim. 3 Moreover he burnt incense in the valley of the son of Hinnom, and burnt his children in the fire, after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel. 4 He sacrificed also and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.

Commentary on Ahaz

1. He was nothing like King David

2. He was no better than the kings of Israel

3. He Burn’s incense (To the God’s and Goddesses of Paganism)

a. When God talks about idolatry in the Old Testament it is Demonology

b. He offered his Children as sacrifices (Vs. 3)

4. He offers Sacrifices and burnt offerings in every High place and under every Green Tree

a. God commanded to worship in 1 place Jerusalem

b. They were Decentralizing worship

5 Wherefore the LORD his God delivered him into the hand of the king of Syria; and they smote him, and carried away a great multitude of them captives, and brought them to Damascus. And he was also delivered into the hand of the king of Israel, who smote him with a great slaughter.

Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel did not attack as a coincidence – God Directed

5. He partnered with the Assyrians

II Kings 16

5 Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war: and they besieged Ahaz, but could not overcome him. 6 At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria, and drave the Jews from Elath: and the Syrians came to Elath, and dwelt there unto this day. 7 So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglathpileser king of Assyria, saying, I am thy servant and thy son: come up, and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria, and out of the hand of the king of Israel, which rise up against me. 8 And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was found in the house of the LORD, and in the treasures of the king's house, and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria. 9 And the king of Assyria hearkened unto him: for the king of Assyria went up against Damascus, and took it, and carried the people of it captive to Kir, and slew Rezin.

[The alliance brought temporary relief he sacrificed the treasures of the temple and his personal things]

10 And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglathpileser king of Assyria, and saw an altar that was at Damascus: and king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the fashion of the altar, and the pattern of it, according to all the workmanship thereof. [He sees a pagan alter and he sends the blueprints to the high priest] 11 And Urijah the priest built an altar according to all that king Ahaz had sent from Damascus: so Urijah the priest made it against king Ahaz came from Damascus. [He prepared it before the king came home] 12 And when the king was come from Damascus, the king saw the altar: and the king approached to the altar, and offered thereon. 13 And he burnt his burnt offering and his meat offering, and poured his drink offering, and sprinkled the blood of his peace offerings, upon the altar. [He then puts God’s alter out of the way] 14 And he brought also the brasen altar, which was before the LORD, from the forefront of the house, from between the altar and the house of the LORD, and put it on the north side of the altar. 15 And king Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest, saying, Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt offering, and the evening meat offering, and the king's burnt sacrifice, and his meat offering, with the burnt offering of all the people of the land, and their meat offering, and their drink offerings; and sprinkle upon it all the blood of the burnt offering, and all the blood of the sacrifice: and the brasen altar shall be for me to enquire by. 16 Thus did Urijah the priest, according to all that king Ahaz commanded.

2 Chronicles 28

23 For he sacrificed unto the gods of Damascus, which smote him: and he said, Because the gods of the kings of Syria help them, therefore will I sacrifice to them, that they may help me. But they were the ruin of him, and of all Israel. 24 And Ahaz gathered together the vessels of the house of God, and cut in pieces the vessels of the house of God, and shut up the doors of the house of the LORD, and he made him altars in every corner of Jerusalem.

[He shuts the doors of the temple and puts up high places all across the land]

Goal: teach these verses in the Context in which they are heard

3 Then said the LORD unto Isaiah, Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shearjashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller's field; [Isaiah went with his son to meet Ahaz where the water supply comes into the city]

**Isaiah = Jehovah Saves

**Shearjashub = a Remnant will survive**

From the Remnant Messiah will come!!

4 And say unto him, Take heed, and be quiet; fear not, neither be fainthearted for the two tails of these smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin with Syria, and of the son of Remaliah. 5 Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have taken evil counsel against thee, saying, 6 Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeal:

[These two kings had the goal of setting up Tabeal (a Syrian name). They wanted to destroy the line of David and put a Syrian king on the throne]

God could not allow this plan to happen because he had promised that Messiah would come from the Davidic line.

Ahaz hears a message of hope if he calls on God. Ahaz does not respond in faith (Vs. 11)

**Any promise made to National Israel cannot be made to the church but it can be made to the individual believer in any era!!**

12 But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD.

[What a pious answer. It is never testing or tempting God to do what he wanted to do]

13 And he [Isaiah] said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men [Stop messing around], but will ye weary my God also? 14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you [Ahaz / House of David {With 2 different recipients and has 2 different applications}] a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

The Sign was to Ahaz at the present (A young madden of the royal household would have a son and call him Emmanuel. The women would not be aware of the prophecy.)

Isaiah Expected an immediate fulfillment [Debatable] (Vs. 15-16)

i. Some believe that Ahaz’s wife who gave birth to Hezekiah. Hezekiah possibly was conserved to be the Messiah (Ch 81-10)

The royal house of David [Not Debatable]

i. It was a promise that Messiah would be come and be born of a virgin

ii. Matthew 1

22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Chapter 9

There was Darkness in Israel because God was hiding his face.

Counsellor, - Denotes one of honorable rank (suited to advise Kings) [Col – in him dwelled all the Godhead bodily]

The mighty God, - he is the all powerful one [John 1:1 – in the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the word was God] Christ had to be God with out sin to atone for sin & he needed to be flesh to die for men.

The everlasting Father, - The Father of eternity – If you want anything eternal you must get it from Christ. All of Christ’s plans and purposes are everlasting. When we put him in our lives what we do become part of eternity.

The Prince of Peace. – not just peace in the soul but one day he will rule on the throne and be a prince of peace

1. God’s Judgment came because of Pride

Judah plans to rebuild after their destruction. They did not see God’s hand of Judgment.

God tells that he will bring judgment from Syria and Philistines. (They were enemies of each other but they so hated Judah that they would join to fight against Judah)

13 For the people turneth not unto him that smiteth them, neither do they seek the LORD of hosts. 14 Therefore the LORD will cut off from Israel head and tail, branch and rush, in one day. 15 The ancient and honourable, he is the head [Those who are in leadership]; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail [The poor, outcasts].

2. God judged them because they were hypocrites.

18 For wickedness burneth as the fire: it shall devour the briers and thorns, and shall kindle in the thickets of the forest, and they shall mount up like the lifting up of smoke.

a. Their sin is like a wildfire that burns everything from high society to the poor.

b. God’s Fire is fueled by People

19 Through the wrath of the LORD of hosts is the land darkened, and the people shall be as the fuel of the fire: no man shall spare his brother.

What an awful fire! Fueled by flesh.

They turned against each other as well. Civil problems and families are fighting each other.

Only By pride cometh Contention.

3. God Judged them because Judges do not dispense justice (Ch 10:1-4)

**What is the Glory of God? **

It is the visual manifestation of His presence.

How did Jesus Conduct his earthly Ministry (Acts 10:38)

How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

i. Jesus was taking our place

ii. Jesus was setting a pattern for us to follow

He showed that we can live the Christ life because we have the Spirit of Christ in us. Jesus Received the Anointing of the Holy Spirit at His Baptism.

** Why Will Christ rule as a man and not God? **

i. To fulfill the original mandate that God gave to Adam in the Garden of Eden

ii. To demonstrate to us once again that as believers we can live in the fullness of the Spirits power.

1. If Christ can do that in the future than we can live that life now

iii. To Demonstrate the 7 Spirits of Christ (Vs. 11:2-3) (The Holy Spirit in his perfect fullness- Jesus was, is, and will be completely in control of the Spirit)

2. Spirit of Understand – How well do you know God’s word

3. Spirit of Council – Can you give God’s council to those who are in dilemmas of life

4. Spirit of Might - When you pray is God’s Spirit moved to action

5. Spirit of Knowledge - Do you know (experience)Christ? Have you been with Him?

6. Spirit of Fear of the lord – Reverence to him and surrender to his will.

7. Spirit of Quick understand in the fear of the Lord – (Quick – Smell) The Spirit gives a sense that is above reason

We can have the same fullness. We access it through Faith

Jesus Depended upon the Spirit to do the father’s will and this was to show the world that he was the perfect theocrat. Jesus Christ is our prototype.

14:4 That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased! 5 The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers.

9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, 10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas, that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. 11 And the merchants of the earth shall weep and mourn over her; for no man buyeth their merchandise any more:

21 And a mighty angel took up a stone like a great millstone, and cast it into the sea, saying, Thus with violence shall that great city Babylon be thrown down, and shall be found no more at all.

Judgment on Babylon

1. It will be carried out by men

2. People will be in pain and Angry at God

Proof that this passage refers to the future Generation (Babylon – not just the city but the entire Iraq)

1. Cosmic Disturbances (Vs. 10-13)

10 For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

Isaiah 13:17 – Persia (Iran) will be the country to lead the attack on Babylon.

17 Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, which shall not regard silver; and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.

3 Categories of Woes.

Woe to those who Ignore God’s Word

Is 28:1-7 They had erred in vision and stumbled in judgment (like a drunkard)
Is 28:13 The people did not want to hear what was preached

Woe to those who only outwardly conform (Vs. 29:1-3)

Ariel – the hearth of an alter (The place sacrifices were made)

God opposes Jerusalem (Ariel) because they are hypocrites

i. They redefine the fear of God to what they want it to be

ii. They have a fear of man

iii. They hide from men what they also hide from God.

Woe to those who trust anything other than the Lord (30:1)

Isaiah was instructed to record this for future generations
When people trust in other things they no longer want the Bible or anything from God

i. They don’t like church

ii. They don’t like pastors

iii. They don’t want God

Their life will crumble spiritually

We can return to God (Vs 18) and receive God’s grace and mercy.

If Christians were to submit themselves to the Holy Spirit, and pray for Revival our world could experience a measure of this righteousness in our day. (Proverbs 13:4 – Righteousness exalts the nation)

a. NT & OT Saints will be reining with Christ.

i. They will rule in Justice (They will be making wise decisions that people will want to obey)

b. Christ will hand pick rulers from the NT & OT Saints

i. Christ is choosing and training these officers today from all the ranks of his redeemed ones, the princes who are to reign in the coming kingdom are being sanctified and trained in the Churches now.

ii. Those who see Christ as their king now will be chosen to rule and reign in Christ’s kingdom (Matt 25 – well done thou good and faithful servant)

3. The Perfect Politician is compassionate and understands man’s weakness

i. He shades you when you are weary so you can find rest for you journey

4. The Perfect Politician gives Perfect Illumination of Truth

a. The same Spirit that will illumine us then will illumine us now

5. The Perfect Politician will Expose Sinner

5 The vile person shall be no more called liberal (giving with money), nor the churl said to be bountiful. 6 For the vile person will speak villany, and his heart will work iniquity, to practise hypocrisy, and to utter error against the LORD, to make empty the soul of the hungry, and he will cause the drink of the thirsty to fail. 7 The instruments also of the churl are evil: he deviseth wicked devices to destroy the poor with lying words, even when the needy speaketh right. 8 But the liberal deviseth liberal things; and by liberal things shall he stand.

a. God will expose sin for what it is

( 9 Rise up, ye women that are at ease; hear my voice, ye careless daughters; give ear unto my speech. 10 Many days and years shall ye be troubled, ye careless women: for the vintage shall fail, the gathering shall not come. 11 Tremble, ye women that are at ease; be troubled, ye careless ones: strip you, and make you bare, and gird sackcloth upon your loins. )

These women characterized the entire culture. – materialism is their God

6. The Perfect Politician will pour out his Spirit in revival

a. The pouring out of the spirit will turn your wilderness into a fruitful field

b. The fruitful field will be counted as a forest

**What does the heavenly host signify? – Demonic realm

What are heavenly bodies? – physical things associated with them

The desert will sing because God will have his vengeance

2. The desert will sing because of the Care of God of his Creatures.

a. If God is faithful not forget these creatures he will not forget us.

3. The desert will sing because of God’s deliverance from desolation

a. Water is what makes the desert blossom

b. The desert singing is symbolic of our own rejoicing of what Christ will do in the Future.

3 Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees. 4 Say to them that are of a fearful heart, Be strong, fear not: behold, your God will come with vengeance, even God with a recompence; he will come and save you.

John the Baptist was discouraged in prison but he was convinced from Is. Not to lose heart.

13 Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews' language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria. 14 Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you. 15 Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. 16 Hearken not to Hezekiah:

1 And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.

6 And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7 Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

2 Chronicles 32

1 After these things [The sickness and recovery], and the establishment thereof, Sennacherib king of Assyria came, and entered into Judah,

25 But Hezekiah rendered not again according to the benefit done unto him; for his heart was lifted up: [he was lifted up in pride]

26 Notwithstanding Hezekiah humbled himself for the pride of his heart, both he and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the wrath of the LORD came not upon them in the days of Hezekiah. [He repented and God had mercy]

The Israelites cried to God in their distress and God delivers.

Humans arise to action. God arises to action when it is time for him to act in deliverance.

What happens when God Arises?

1. What prompts God to Rise?

**(Vs. 2) The Cries of God’s people for help prompts God to Action**

a. Crying to God by it self does not ensure deliverance.

b. The heart must be broken not just asking for relief of pressure.

c. 2 Qualifications

i. Contrite Heart

1. You do not deserve deliverance

ii. a Heart of Faith

1. (30:18) they must believe God for deliverance

2. Dependence on God’s promises is essential to receiving answers to our prayers

Is 37:29 Because thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into mine ears, therefore will I put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

**In Israel the Condition of the land is always a reflection of the spiritual condition of the Nation.**

2. The beautiful results when God Arises

a. When God Arises His enemies are scattered

i. When the Assyrians left they left everything

b. When God Arises God’s Spirit is poured out

c. When God Arises God’s power is manifest

i. When we are in times of distress the world expects us to respond like they do, but if we look to God and trust him it will be set apart.

d. When God Arises the Backsliders Fear

i. They are convicted about their sin.

e. When God Arises the Pure in Heart see God

i. Is 33:5 He that walketh righteously, and speaketh uprightly; he that despiseth the gain of oppressions, that shaketh his hands from holding of bribes, that stoppeth his ears from hearing of blood, and shutteth his eyes from seeing evil; 16 He shall dwell on high: his place of defence shall be the munitions of rocks: bread shall be given him; his waters shall be sure. 17 Thine eyes shall see the king in his beauty: they shall behold the land that is very far off.[this is not heaven but the millennial reign of Christ]

1 Comfort ye, comfort [Encouragement to Jerusalem] ye my people, saith your God. 2 Speak ye comfortably [the people would receive joy] to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD'S hand double for all her sins. [This is a hing between the 1st and 2nd part of the book]

3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: 5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

9 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O

Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God! 10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. 11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

They needed comfort because of all the trials and troubles they had been through. They would also go through more trials.

6 Behold, the days come, that all that is in thine house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store until this day, shall be carried to Babylon: nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.

First 39 chapters of Isaiah is mostly about judgment.

From 40 On God comforts them with promises about the messiah.

(Vs. 2) Isaiah would Claim or preach comfort to the people

Isaiah’s Message of comfort

1. God’s Forgiveness is assured (Vs. 2)

2 Speak ye comfortably to Jerusalem, and cry unto her, that her warfare is accomplished, that her iniquity is pardoned: for she hath received of the LORD'S hand double for all her sins.

a. Your warfare is accomplished (Bondage and Judgment will be over)

b. Your Iniquity will be Pardoned

c. They would receive a Double Blessing

**Pardoned is usually translated Accepted**

2. God’s Glory will be Revealed (Vs. 3)

5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

a. John the Baptist would precede Christ and prepare the people spiritually for his coming.

i. Why was a forerunner necessary?

1. Israel was like a spiritual desert

2. John needed to prepare them spiritually

ii. Why was Israel such a desert?

1. The Spiritual leaders were Spiritually bankrupt

2. They had not heard from God since Mariachi

Was it necessary for people to be baptized after Jesus preached if they were baptized under John? John was the Bridge between the NT and the OT.

b. We will proceed the Millennium

4 Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain: 5 And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.

i. Who will be the forerunners? The 144,000

ii. The 144,000 are

1. Jewish

2. Men

3. Never Married

4. Saved in the Tribulation

5. With the 2 prophets that return they will preach the Gospel and many will be saved.

6. Their purpose is to prepare people for Christ’s second coming.

**Is 40:3 applies to John the Baptist, 144,000, and us before the Tribulation.**

3. God’s Arm Will Rule (Vs. 9-11)

9 O Zion, that bringest good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, that bringest good tidings, lift up thy voice with strength; lift it up, be not afraid; say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God! 10 Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. 11 He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.

a. God tells Isaiah that the good tidings must be proclaimed from the mountain tops

b. Christ will not just come at the battle of Armageddon but he will reign.

God Tries to comfort his people but they refuse.

27 Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God?

1. God is able to Deliver (do anything?)

a. (Vs. 12) – who hath measured the waters in his hand (God can hold all the water of the world in the palm of his hand)

b. (Vs. 12) – Who hath measured heaven with a span

c. (vs. 12) – Who knows how many dust particles

d. (Vs. 12) – Who weighed the mountains in his hand

e. (Vs. 13) – Who told God how to create the world

2. God is willing to Deliver(Vs. 26, 28)

a. We can wait on the Lord

i. We can look at life from God’s perspective

ii. Wait on the lord – recognize that the God of the world is capable of meeting you need and seeing that he will deliver you from your kneed **(to know that God is able to deliver and to confidently expect him to deliver according to his word no matter how long it takes)**

b. God will exchange your weakness for his power

i. **Renew – means exchange**

10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. 11 Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish. 12 Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought. 13 For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. 14 Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the LORD, and thy redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. 15 Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. 16 Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and thou shalt rejoice in the LORD, and shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel. 17 When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. 18 I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water. 19 I will plant in the wilderness the cedar, the shittah tree, and the myrtle, and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together: 20 That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

This passage is not just future deliverance but current deliverance

When God speaks everyone listens. (Get ready for debate)

21 Produce your cause, saith the LORD; bring forth your strong reasons, saith the King of Jacob.

The picture is a trial where God will try all the nations. All their gods and idols are not able to deliver.

22 Let them bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen [can the idols predict the future]: let them shew the former things, [What predictions have your idols made that have come true] what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come.

Israel is watching the case and God talks to them about how the Idols cannot predict the future.

God’s motivations to trust in Him.

1. (Vs. 2) – I will raise up one to defeat you enemies

a. it will be from the east (Cyrus)

i. Evidence – name mentioned in 45:1

ii. Evidence – the man from the east and the north

1. king of the medo empire

2. king of the Persian empire

b. He will be a righteous man

i. He was described as a Just monarch

c. He would rule over many nations and kings

2. (Vs. 9) – to prompt them to trust Him (You are my special people)

3. (Vs. 10) - Fear not I will help you

a. when you rest in Christ He will take care of your enemies

4. (Vs. 14-16) – you will become victorious

a. we are worms (maggots) because of our sin

5. (Vs. 18) – I will turn your wilderness into an oasis

a. when you are thirsty I will bring water

b. I am come that you might have life and that you might have it more abundantly

20 That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the LORD hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. 2 He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. 4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.

7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house. 8 I am the LORD: that is my name:

17 They shall be turned back, they shall be greatly ashamed, that trust in graven images, that say to the molten images, Ye are our gods.

18 Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see. 19 Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD'S servant? 20 Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not. 21 The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable. 22 But this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses: they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore. 23 Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come? 24 Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law. 25 Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.

Characteristics of the 2 Servants

1. Christ – The precious Son of God

2. Israel –

8 But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen

a. They were in Idolatry

8 I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.

God Does not have any toleration for any worship other than him

b. They were in Spiritual Deafness & Blindness

18 Hear, ye deaf; and look, ye blind, that ye may see. 19 Who is blind, but my servant? or deaf, as my messenger that I sent? who is blind as he that is perfect, and blind as the LORD'S servant? 20 Seeing many things, but thou observest not; opening the ears, but he heareth not.

23 Who among you will give ear to this? who will hearken and hear for the time to come?

i. You can choose not to listen to God (we make chooses)

ii. How can a servant be useful if they are deaf and blind

c. A spiritually destitute Condition

24 Who gave Jacob for a spoil, and Israel to the robbers? did not the LORD, he against whom we have sinned? for they would not walk in his ways, neither were they obedient unto his law.

i. They made foolish choices and as a result God sent judgment to them

25 Therefore he hath poured upon him the fury of his anger, and the strength of battle: and it hath set him on fire round about, yet he knew not; and it burned him, yet he laid it not to heart.

ii. when We don’t listen God will bring more chastening

1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth;[Jesus the Son of God is the Object of God’s divine Favor. He alone is the one who can do it.] I have put my spirit upon him:[At his Baptism Acts 10:38 (Jesus in a human Body needed the Spirit to enable and guide Him. He set an Example for believers)] he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.[Jesus brought judgment in the form of the Gospel (it judges the hearer instantly) John 3:18 This condemnation was brought to the forefront so people would know that they are in need of a savior] 2 He shall not cry [To proclaim with a loud voice] [Jesus was meek and mild/ In no way did he want to be view as a revolutionary against government. He was resolved to carry through the will of the Father], nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. 3 A bruised reed [the reed represents hurting people (poor, oppressed, Spiritually troubled). Christ did not come to bull them over he wanted to bring them to himself.] shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench:[He came to help people who were week spiritually. Example Christ with Peter the night of the trial. Even though Christ knew that Peter rejected him he still comforted him.] he shall bring forth judgment unto truth. [Jesus came to bring Salvation] 4 He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law. [The gentiles will wait for his Gospel]

5 Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: 6 I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand,[God holds your hand if you will let him, it takes 2 to hold hands] and will keep thee,[I will preserve thee & sanctify thee.] and give thee for a covenant [Promise] of the people,[Jesus Ushered in the New Covenant (Old covenant condition – Israel’s obedience / New Covent condition – Christ’s finished work)] for a light of the Gentiles; 7 To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

Matthew 12:14

14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. 15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all; 16 And charged them that they should not make him known: 17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, 18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles. 19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. 20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory. 21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
