Introduction: We now embark on a journey into the doctrine of salvation as we explore, like a diamond, all the facets of its glorious truth. The message of the Gospel has been attacked as much as any truth of God’s Word, for it is the “power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes.” Paul’s Epistle to the Romans declares the necessity of the Gospel. It then reveals how God’s eternal plan was worked out through His Son, Jesus Christ. This great Epistle which expounds various doctrines surrounding the message of salvation concludes with practical insight on how to live out the reality of the Christian life.

Discussion: · What does “the old man is crucified with Christ” mean in a practical sense?· Is there a distinction between the flesh and the old man?· What caused Eve to sin before she had the fallen Adamic nature?· In Romans 8 compare how many times the word “flesh” is used to how many times the word “old man” is used. |

u Expansion of Collective Responses according to Romans 6
I. Understand the Facts of Sanctification 6:3-10
ð Key word: “know” (3 times: vv. 3, 6, 9 – yet three different words)
ð There are three facts you must know.
A. Fact 1: All Believers are Saints .
ð Identification with the death of Christ necessitates identification with the life of Christ.
1. Truth Statement (6:3) “know” (agnoeo)
& Romans 6:3
“Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?”
ð When we were placed into Christ (at salvation), we were placed into His death.
2. Purpose Statement (6:4) “that” (hina)
& Romans 6:4
“Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
ð We died with Christ so that we might live with Christ.
3. Reason Statement (6:5) “for”
& Romans 6:5
“For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection:”
ð Union with Christ in His death demands union with Christ in His resurrection.
B. Fact 2: All Saints are Free to Live Victoriously .
ð Identification with the death of Christ liberates us from sin as a master.
1. Truth Statement (6:6a) “knowing” (ginosko)
Page 14
& Romans 6:6a
“Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him . . .”
ð Our unregenerated spirits were crucified with Christ.
2. Purpose Statement (6:6b) “that” (hina)
& Romans 6:6b
“ . . . that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.”
ð The crucifixion of our unregenerated spirits was to free us from forced service to the master of sin.
3. First Reason Statement (6:7) “For”
& Romans 6:7
“For he that is dead is freed from sin.”
ð Through the separation of death, sin is no longer our master.
4. Second Reason Statement (6:8)
& Romans 6:8
“Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him:”
ð Separation from sin (as our old master) is followed by union with Christ (as our new Master)
Summary:
ð Unregenerated condition:
§ dead to/separated from God
§ alive to/joined to sin
ð Regenerated Condition:
§ dead to/separated from sin
§ alive to/joined to God
C. Fact 3: Christ is the Victory!
ð Identification with the death and resurrection of Christ finalizes the victory over death and sin.
1. Truth Statement (6:9) “knowing” (oida)
& Romans 6:9
“Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him."
ð Christ’s resurrection freed Him forever from death’s dominion.
2. Reason Statement (6:10) “For”
& Romans 6:10
“For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.”
ð Christ’s death to sin was once for all and His life/living to God is forever.
Summary:
We are in him – free from sin’s claim of death (we died) and free to live to God!
Page 15
II. Personalize the Facts of Sanctification (6:11)
& Romans 6:11
“Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
ð After presenting the facts, we find the first imperative in the text.
ð This command, however, is not directly to your will, but to your mind (reckon) and to your affections (yourselves)
ð “Reckon” is an accounting term (cf. Romans 3:28)
· In Christ (6:11b), you are separated from sin (sinful life) and united to God (Holy Life).
ð We must heartily agree with the facts!
A. Fact One: I am a Saint!
B. Fact Two: I am Free to Live Victoriously!
C. Fact Three: Christ is My Victory!
III. Depend on the facts of Sanctification (6:12-23)
ð After the command to your mind and affections come three imperatives directly to your will.
A. Two “ Stop “ Commands
Stop placing yourself under the authority of sin (6:12).
& Romans 6:12
“Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.”
Stop presenting your bodily members as accomplices to sin (6:13a).
& Romans 6:13
“Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin:”
B. One “ Start “ Command
Start presenting all to God (6:13b&14)
& Romans 6:12
“ . . . but yield ye yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.”
ð NOTE: Faith here is described rather than stated.
1. Presentation: Surrender/Faith – both directional (6:13) and daily (6:16)
a. To God (6:13)
& Romans 6:13
“Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.”
b. For Obedience (6:15-16)
& Romans 6:15-16
Page 16
“What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?”
c. With bodily members (6:17-19)
& Romans 6:17-19
“But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness. I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity: even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.”
2. Promise: Sanctification (6:20-23)
& Romans 6:20-23
“For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
