Date – Likely written in 55 or 56 AD. Some place the writing as early as 53 AD and some as late as 58 AD.

Recipients – Written to believers in Rome.

The Gospel is salvation to all who believe. This means salvation from old patterns of thought and behavior, as well as hell.

Introduction:       We now embark on a journey into the doctrine of salvation as we explore, like a diamond, all the facets of its glorious truth. The message of the Gospel has been attacked as much as any truth of God’s Word, for it is the “power of God unto salvation to everyone that believes.” Paul’s Epistle to the Romans declares the necessity of the Gospel. It then reveals how God’s eternal plan was worked out through His Son, Jesus Christ. This great Epistle which expounds various doctrines surrounding the message of salvation concludes with practical insight on how to live out the reality of the Christian life.

Romans 1:1-17

“Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

ð  After presenting the facts, we find the first imperative in the text.

ð  This command, however, is not directly to your will, but to your mind (reckon) and to your affections (yourselves)

ð  “Reckon” is an accounting term (cf. Romans 3:28)

·         In Christ (6:11b), you are separated from sin (sinful life) and united to God (Holy Life).

ð  We must heartily agree with the facts!
