PROVERBS 1:20-33

THE END OF WISDOM

 

Introduction

 

The beginning of wisdom (1:1-7)

The benefits of wisdom (1:8-9)

The alternative to wisdom (1:10-19)

The call of wisdom (1:20-23)

The end of wisdom (1:24-33)

 

 

Here we have the call of two women (they’re given female form), the call of Folly and the call of Wisdom.

 

I. Christ’s Call (v20-21)

Proverbs 1:20 Wisdom calls aloud outside; she raises her voice in the public places:

Proverbs 1:21 She cries in the noisiest places, at the city gates [lit. at the doors of the gates in the city] she speaks her words,

II. Christ’s Challenge (v.22)

Proverbs 1:22 How long, you deceived ones, will you love being deceived? How long will mockers desire mocking, and the ignorant hate knowledge?

III. Christ’s Compassion (v.23)

Proverbs 1:23 If you will turn at my rebuke, behold I will pour out my spirit on you, I will make my words known to you.

WbWvªT' bwv verb qal imperfect 2nd person masculine plural   2340.0 bWv (shûb) (re)turn. (2340a) hb'Wv (shûbâ) retirement, withdrawal (Isa 30:15).
h['yBiäa; [bn verb hiphil imperfect 1st person common singular cohortative in both form and meaning   1287.0 [b;n' (n¹ba±) pour, gush forth. (1287a) [;WBm; (mabbû±a) spring of water (Eccl 12:6; Isa 35:7; Isa 49:10).

IV. Christ’s Clock (v.24-30)

 

Proverbs 1:24 Because I called, and you refused; I stretched out my hand, and no one paid attention.

Proverbs 1:25 But rather you ignored all my advice, and would not accept my reproof:

Proverbs 1:26 I also will laugh at your disaster; I will mock when your terror comes;

Proverbs 1:27 When your fear comes as devastastion, and your destruction comes like a whirlwind; when distress and trouble comes upon you.

Proverbs 1:28 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer; they will seek me earnestly, but they will not find me:

Proverbs 1:29 Because they hated knowledge, and they did not choose the fear of the LORD:

Proverbs 1:30 They would have none of my advice: they despised all my rebukes.

V. Christ’s Condemnation (v.31-32)

Proverbs 1:31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own plans.

Proverbs 1:32 For the turning away of the deceived will slay them, and the prosperity of fools will destroy them.

VI. Christ’s Comfort (v.33)

Proverbs 1:33 But whoever listens to me will dwell safely and at ease and without fear of harm.
