TAKE HOME POINTS….
1) Spiritual gain according to the Bible always trump physical gain. ALWAYS…
2) If we live as some preachers have called it, with a view toward eternity, setbacks, struggles, challenges along our way will not be devastating but rather challenges that will refine us and make us stronger… Heb. 11
Read a bit from this chapter to encourage people…
LET’S DIVE IN

1 Surely God is good to Israel,

to those who are pure in heart.

2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;

I had nearly lost my foothold.

3 For I envied the arrogant

when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

4 They have no struggles;

their bodies are healthy and strong.

5 They are free from the burdens common to man;

they are not plagued by human ills.

6 Therefore pride is their necklace;

they clothe themselves with violence.

7 From their callous hearts comes iniquity;

the evil conceits of their minds know no limits.

8 They scoff, and speak with malice;

in their arrogance they threaten oppression.

9 Their mouths lay claim to heaven,

and their tongues take possession of the earth.

10 Therefore their people turn to them

and drink up waters in abundance.

11 They say, “How can God know?

Does the Most High have knowledge?”

12 This is what the wicked are like—

always carefree, they increase in wealth.

13 Surely in vain have I kept my heart pure;

in vain have I washed my hands in innocence.

14 All day long I have been plagued;

I have been punished every morning.

15 If I had said, “I will speak thus,”

I would have betrayed your children.

16 When I tried to understand all this,

it was oppressive to me

17 till I entered the sanctuary of God;

then I understood their final destiny.

18 Surely you place them on slippery ground;

you cast them down to ruin.

19 How suddenly are they destroyed,

completely swept away by terrors!

20 As a dream when one awakes,

so when you arise, O Lord,

you will despise them as fantasies.

21 When my heart was grieved

and my spirit embittered,

22 I was senseless and ignorant;

I was a brute beast before you.

23 Yet I am always with you;

you hold me by my right hand.

24 You guide me with your counsel,

and afterward you will take me into glory.

25 Whom have I in heaven but you?

And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

26 My flesh and my heart may fail,

but God is the strength of my heart

and my portion forever.

27 Those who are far from you will perish;

you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.

28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.

I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge;

I will tell of all your deeds.

Prosperity of the Wicked v3

(means peace or completeness,or well being)
arrogant.... boastful
wicked....enemies of God
ASAPH’S PITY PARTY!
when he looked at the arrogant-wicked
The Bible Knowledge Commentary A. Prosperity of the Wicked (73:1–14)

A. Prosperity of the wicked (73:1–14)

73:1–3. Asaph began this psalm by affirming that though God is good to those in Israel who trust Him and are pure in heart (cf. v. 13), he himself nearly slipped (cf. 94:18) in his confidence in the Lord. The psalmist emphasized his own situation by beginning four verses with the Hebrew expression translated But as for me (73:2, 22–23, 28). His offense was that he was envious of the prosperity of the wicked. Why should the people who oppose God be better off than those who trust Him? This problem was so overwhelming he almost lost faith in God’s goodness.

Asaph...one of David’s chief musicians, a Levite, appointed for worship in the Temple...

CAN WE FALL INTO THIS SAME TRAP-mindset of Asaph???

Of Course we can when we forget WHO is in ultimate control!!!
IS GOD STILL POWERFUL ENOUGH TO CONTROL OUR WORLD AND THE EVENTS OF IT???
HIS OBSERVATIONS:
1. He observed that the wicked do not seem to suffer trouble as other people do (vv. 4–5).
2. They cover themselves with pride and violence (v. 6).
3. Their evil devices are unbounded v7
4. Their speech is scornful, malicious, and arrogant, as if they owned the earth (vv. 8–9).
5. Many people are carried away by their evil (they turn to them, v. 10)
6. and presumptuous self-confidence, thinking God does not know of their sin (v. 11; cf. 94:7)
7. With no cares in the world (cf. 73:4–5, 12) wicked, arrogant people continue to prosper.[7]
HIS CONCLUSION concerning the wicked..
This is what the wicked are like—
always carefree, they increase in wealth. v12
THIS IS NOT A 100% TRUE STATEMENT..
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOW CAN YOU RELATE TO ASAPH’S DILEMMA?
WE ALL HAVE BAD DAYS, BUT WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM JESUS concerning the hateful?
John 3:19-21.....Jesus says”
19 “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20 Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God.” [1]
CAN I DRAW A CONNECTION BETWEEN WHAT ASAPH WAS STRUGGLING WITH AND WHAT I STRUGGLE WITH AS I OBSERVE MY DAILY LIFE EVENTS?

HOW DO I AVOID FALLING VICTIM TO THIS TRAP THAT ASAPH FOUND HIMSELF IN? V2-3

#1) Do not love.....
1 John 2:15–16 NIV84
15 Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For everything in the world—the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does—comes not from the Father but from the world.
THIS WORLD TRULY IS NOT OUR HOME!
#2) Do not store up
Matthew 6:19–21 NIV84
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
"live for the line, and not the dot”
#3) Rest Assured that our beliefs are strong, secure and eternal
Heb. 11:16

16 Instead, they were longing for a better country—a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them.

12 That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day. [1] 2Ti. 1
ASAPH WAKES UP!
v17 till I entered the sanctuary of God; then I understood their final destiny.
What do you think happens when we enter the Sanctuary of God?
Psalm 91:1–2 NIV84
1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
Consider with me the change of mind that happens as you go through this Psalm.
He is leaving the pity party behind and his eyes are being opened, and he is remembering WHAT is truly important to him.
WHAT CAUSED HIM TO REMEMBER WHAT IS TRULY IMPORTANT???
Asaph’s CONCLUSION:
23 Yet I am always with you;
you hold me by my right hand. “the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases”
24 You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me into glory.
25 Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
26 My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart
and my portion forever.[1] Ps. 73:23-26
PAUSE, BREATHE AL....
ASK THE QUESTION:
DO WE LIVE OUR LIVES AS THOUGH THIS IS TRUE???
HE CIRCLES BACK TO THE BEGINNING TO ADDRESS THE WICKED...
27 Those who are far from you will perish;
you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.
....and TO ADDRESS HIMSELF...
28 But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign Lord my refuge;
I will tell of all your deeds.[1]
