Intro - Sermon Series

Last week we looked at Mark 6 and we have been in series of Mark. - Unfiltered Jesus
Who is this Jesus, is he the Messiah?
Jesus went to his home town where we was Rejected.
Thomas talked about Pastors having Guts - Got that covered.
Start believing in God again.
This series is really testing our identity, Mark is a Gospel of WHO Jesus is and WHAT he did. and God has been revealing who WE are in the Process.
We have been going through transformation | hearts, Absorbing the word etc |
Time and time again Jesus chooses his purpose over what was Popular
Maybe, God is calling us to do the same.
Today’s message “Choose Purpose over Popularity”
Choose to follow God’s Purpose for your life!!!
**Pray**
Mark 7:1–5 ESV
Now when the Pharisees gathered to him, with some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem, they saw that some of his disciples ate with hands that were defiled, that is, unwashed. (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they wash their hands properly, holding to the tradition of the elders, and when they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they wash. And there are many other traditions that they observe, such as the washing of cups and pots and copper vessels and dining couches.) And the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat with defiled hands?”
**Context**
At this point, people started believing, Jesus could be “Messiah” | Hostility was growing | Miracles had been happening | Jesus walking on water, there is some unrest in the “Norm”
Washing hands, what did they do?
*You think our Signs are bad*
Wash with Water - Not ordinary water | Special stone vessels were kept, ordinary water might be unclean | then you take the water and fill it up one and a half egg shell | run from fingers to wrist | Then rub fist into the palm | Then water again from Wrist to Fingers |
This is Mans tradition, let’s look at the Biblical tradition
Exodus 30:19 ESV
with which Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet.
Exodus 40:12 ESV
Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting and shall wash them with water
Look at how far away | Pharisees are not evil to the core | They created their own scripture | Far from God | Scribes built on Word of God | This would seperate them from Jews and Gentiles | We want better |
We all want to be more righteous than the other and we have problem with grace **Vineyard Story** | Core issue is Pride | We want to look like we have it together | This is NOT how Jesus connects to heart. Not how find your purpose
Should do things out of conviction, Not religion;
Come to church
Take communion
repent
Just a habit
**Connect through vulnarabilities - New girl at work** - That person that has it all together
I love this | Pharisees try and use tradition to catch out Jesus | Jesus points them to where? The word
Mark 7:6–13 ESV
And he said to them, “Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, “ ‘This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men.” And he said to them, “You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’; and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If a man tells his father or his mother, “Whatever you would have gained from me is Corban” ’ (that is, given to God)— then you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or mother, thus making void the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And many such things you do.”
It was Jesus failure to follow this “Traditional Law” that kept people out and kept seperation but Jesus wants relationship.
Jesus came with a PURPOSE - Not for Popularity
So what Does Jesus say defiles a person if it’s not Food;
Mark 7:14–23 ESV
And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him, since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.) And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
Guess who sees your heart? | Can’t use a heart that doesn’t want change | can make it look like all is together on outside | on inside we are a mess, which is fine, if we have a heart for change | Becoming less and less popular | He wants a heart connection with you, a real relationship where he is always with you
Psalm 51:16–17 ESV
For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
1 Samuel 16:6–7 ESV
When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
Then a beautiful part of Scripture comes, where Jesus shows the purpose of the Law, the heart of God and the heart it takes;
Mark 7:24–30 ESV
And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. And he said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children’s bread and throw it to the dogs.” But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” And he said to her, “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.” And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.
HOW DARE JESUS - Are we coming because we NEED something? It always starts at the bottom.
She came with humble heart | **Give Context**
How humble was her? How hungry are we? After what happened at his home town.
Jesus wants us here in relationship
Story of Queensland - Relationship with each other and what Emma said “I don’t care as long as I am with you”
Not come and go in hard times or good.
The Bible is SIMPLE - Love your wife | Honor your mother |
Hard to execute - GOD MUST BE IN THE GAP.
If you want to find your purpose - Find your relationship with GOD
CONCLUSION & COMMUNION
God cares about your heart , like a real person, only…God - like who wants a REAL relationshop with you | He is the God of your Heart |
Do you want the key to understanding scripture and real change?
Come to read God’s word seeing yourself as you ought!
My heart is rubbish, I fall short, but I want real change.
**Gospel Story**
He came with a humble heart - Perfect example of what humble means | He was GOD and he came to SERVE | He had power over all | Chose to be beaten for 6 hours by those under him for you and for me | Chose to let his betrayer betray him because he KNEW what had to happen ,for you and me | How are we following his example?
