Abraham and Issac
03-21-2021
This morning we are going to continue our move through Genesis
Genesis is one of my most favorite books in the Bible because it has so much of how everything began
But we will continue through Genesis to the Story of Abraham and Issac
As we get to Abraham and Issac it is important to know the history of Abraham
Abraham was called by God to leave his home country
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you;
We know what happens Abraham is obedient and leaves His fathers land
Abraham was promised a land
1 Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you;
7 The Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” So he built an altar there to the Lord who had appeared to him.
God also promises Abraham land and that that land would be given to his descendants
Abraham was promised to the Father of a great nation
2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”
Abraham after He leaves his fathers land God also promises Him that He will be a great nation
Abraham was promised a son
16 “I will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her. Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples will come from her.”
21 “But My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will bear to you at this season next year.”
Abraham and Sarah are promised a son named Issac
This is the promised son that God spoke about so long ago
That would make Abraham a great nation
Yes I understand that was just the highlights
This brings us to the account of Abraham and Issac
1 Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
God is going to test Abraham
This verse I believe we skim over because it doesn’t sometimes fit into our neat little box of who we think God is
But when we think of testing it is not like satan tests us to sin but rather God is testing Abraham to bring Him closer to Him
To drawn Abraham into a deeper relationship with Him
Abrahams response to Gods testing is simple
It is what we have been preaching for sometime now church
Abraham is obedient to the call of Christ
the reason He is obedient is because of his History with Christ
3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
God is doing a good work in Abraham
God is going to produce a good work in Abraham but to do that He must test
See right now God is going to help grow Abraham’s faith muscle
And would you know that it is not easy to grow our faith muscle
2 He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance. 5 Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. 7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together. 9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son.
Abraham is going to be obedient to the call of God
God is asking Abraham to sacrifice his son, the son that was promised, the son that Abraham had been waiting for almost 100 years for
The Son that God was going to o fulfill the many promises to Abraham
Notice Abraham’s faith muscle is being tested
Abraham might be nervous but it doesn’t mention that
Abraham is obedient because He has experienced God before
He had experienced God’s faithfulness
He had exercised his faith muscle
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; 18 it was he to whom it was said, “In Isaac your descendants shall be called.” 19 He considered that God is able to raise people even from the dead, from which he also received him back as a type.
It was faith in God that was credited to Abraham
Abraham even considered that God is able to raise people from the dead
Abraham believed that if he did in fact go through with sacrificing his promised Son
That if he was obedient to Gods call to sacrifice his promised son
that God would be able to bring him back from the dead
Abrahams faith muscle is being tested
To grow our physical muscles
After you workout, your body repairs or replaces damaged muscle fibers through a cellular process where it fuses muscle fibers together to form new muscle protein strands or myofibrils. These repaired myofibrils increase in thickness and number to create muscle hypertrophy (growth).
Our faith muscle is no different and sometimes church God wants to bring us into a closer deeper relationship with Him
7 so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which is perishable, even though tested by fire, may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
God was testing Abraham so that Abrahams relationship with God could and would grow
So that Abraham could see the glory of God resulting in the Praise of God
Because Abraham had experienced God prior but never to this degree
Abrahams faith muscle was going and preparing Him for what is to come
We know the rest of the story
11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” 13 Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son. 14 Abraham called the name of that place The Lord Will Provide, as it is said to this day, “In the mount of the Lord it will be provided.” 15 Then the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven, 16 and said, “By Myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this thing and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 indeed I will greatly bless you, and I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens and as the sand which is on the seashore; and your seed shall possess the gate of their enemies. 18 “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.”
God stops Abraham from sacrificing his promised son
God provides a ram to be sacrificed in place of Issac
God tells Abraham that God knows and I would suspect that know even Abraham knows that his own faith is growing
God knows that Abraham loves God more than the promised son
Abraham knows that he loves God more than the promised son
This particular sermon was a bit different
I have worked through this sermon for a week and struggle with it
We have preached the word
We have learned a few things
We have some more knowledge which is good to know
But how to we apply this to our own lives today?
So a few things we can begin to apply to our daily lives from this account of Abraham and Issac
That God will test you sometimes and it is not for the purpose of trying to catch you but so that your faith muscles will grow
That God desires you and I like Peter to get out of the boat and enjoy the presence of God
To go deeper into the garden with Jesus
That when you are tested your faith does grow and that is a good thing
That is produces growth, endurance and strength
Now some of us will argue with God and say that you and I have enough already but the God who so uniquely desired and created you knows better
Trust God
Obey God
CLOSING
This morning as the band comes up
Maybe you are here this morning and do not have a personal relationship with Jesus
I would invite you to the front to speak with someone and they will show you through scripture how Jesus loved you enough right where you are to pay for your debt of sin
That through repenting and trusting in Jesus this morning you can leave this place a new creation
Or maybe you are here this morning and simply need to spend sometime in prayer at the altar
The altar is open
